Anyone heard from M + W?
Went to the paed today - not reflux but he thinks Joshua might be lactose intolerant, so I have to limit my dairy for the 'boobie snacks' he gets and we are trying him on a lactose free formula. Fingers crossed.
Other than the wind pain issues he is doing well - weighing in today at 5kg, which is pretty damn good for an almost 4 week old! My little (or not so little) man is doing great.... :O)

Hi Everyone
Savina - Congratulations and glad to hear that you are doing well.
TK - Nappy rash is a shocker!!! I have had so many issues with nappy rash and DD1 - she seems to have an allergic reaction to most nappy rash creams I have tried on her (anything with Zinc) similar to what you described with Caitlin. The only thing that has worked for us is canestan cream. That stuff is also magic at clearing it up in just one application. I hope Caitlin's nappy rash is gone for good now. Not much fun at all.
Leanne - I hope that what the doctor recommended starts to make a difference. I have just spent 9 hours rocking my very unsettled windy little girl. Infant's Friend has stopped helping now and Infacol worked for about a day and now nothing is working. It is driving me to insanity! It is so awful to see them in pain. I hope Josh is doing much better and you start to have a few more settled days.
AFM - We had Xanthe's 10 day appointment yesterday (even though she was 15 days ). Everything is going really well (apart from the wind issues but that is a whole other thread). She is gaining weight nicely - 4.3kg now. She was born weighing 4.1kg but went to special care and was discharged 24 hours later weighing 3.8kg so that is a 500g gain since day 2. Nothing wrong with her eating!
Anyway, she is screaming again so I am going to have to go and try and find someway to settle her so we get some sleep tonight. It has been a looooong day!

Hi All,
Would like to join you on this thread. 'Jaida Grace' was born on 19/09/09 weighing 3.165kgs.
We are settling quite well and Jaida is furiously feeding. She does get terrible belly pain though... it is soo awful seeing her little face go bright red with pain. Then we have a vicious cycle of not sleeping due to pain and then getting rather grumpy cause she is overtired. When Jaida is over tired we can get her to sleep with hugs and rubs but she wont stay asleep..... go figure.
Maybe I will try the infant drops.
Glad this thread is here as there are questions I am sure we will all be able to answer together.
Speak soon

Congratulations on the birth of Jaida. I have added her details to our arrivals list at the beginning of the thread.
It is so awful that they have horrible wind pain. I hope you find something that works for you - it can be really stressful. My baby sounds just like yours - feeding lots but getting lots of pain after every feed. She is my second very windy baby and I know that it won't be like this forever. It is still really hard at times though.
Looking forward to getting to know you and your bub.

Hi All
Sorry, I haven't had time to keep up with BB lately, it seems like my whole day is spent feeding/burping/sleeping - feeding/burping/sleeping - feeding/burping/sleeping etc, etc, etc
Welcome to Easha & Jaida and Erybery & Ella.
We seem to be having similar troubles to others in this group re wind - which then leads to trouble settling then getting overtired etc. Poor old Emily gets wind pains, then won't settle, but wakes up wanting to feed. I've tried everything I can think of, but just cant seem to find anything that works.
Is anyone else having trouble with breastfeeding? I'm finding it really hard as my nipples are sooooo sore - Emily wanting to feed so often definitely doesn't help!! I've got an appt this afternoon with a lactation consultant so hopefully that might sort out any issues. Fingers crossed.
Angela

Angela - I hope your lactation appointment goes well and you get some answers. It's good to know I am not the only one struggling through windy baby issues. If you get any good hints from the LC be sure to come back and let us all in on the secret

I am only a 'part time' feeder (now onto three feeds a day) but my paed did say that reducing my dairy should help with Joshua's wind issues.... Just a thought. Would be interested to hear what the LC says Angela as I am trying to increase his BF's. Mental note to self, speak to clinic next week re this.
Does anyone find that they have more milk in one side. I swear my left BB is twice the size as my right one. Sorry if TMI.

Hi All,
Thanks for the welcome.... it is nice to know we are all in the same boat. Jaida and I had a challenging night with her being awake from 2pm onwards until her morning feed at 6pm.... exhausting. Lovely DH got up to her though to try to settle her - bless him.
Have had an awesome day though - hoping the routine continues through the night.
I realised after reading everyones posts last night that I had been eating coleslaw every day over the past few days and what does it have in it..... cabbage and onion . I have also eliminated dairy for the moment to see if it make a difference. The chemist did want us to give her anything for wind without a doc recommending it give she is still 3 wks old. See a nurse Monday.
I too have sore nipples... feels like razor blades on one side for the first 3-4 sucks. I also feed slight pain in the shoulder blade??? Anyone else have this?
I also have a free flow problem... the poor darl gagging on all the milk at times.
All fun and games at this stage.
Certainly interested in the LC advice, please share.
Anyway better do the dishes before Jaida wakes.
Speak soon

I too have had sore nipples. I have had deep, deep cracks and awful blisters from Annie attempting to feed. For now we're just feeding her EBM and having the occasional breast feed, 1-2 times a day. Anelise is getting her tongue tie snipped on Wednesday so hopefully we'll be able to have loads more breast feeds after that's done.
For my sore nipples, I have been rubbing breast milk on them and leaving all clothing off until my nipples are totally dry. This has helped a little. The thing that has helped the most has been expressing & resting. My appt with the LC resulted in nothing other than being told that everything I have been doing is correct, but the TT is holding us back.
I am really upset about having to have the TT snip done. It was awful having Harrison's done, even though he barely wimpered. Just the thought of having to do it again is getting me down a little. Also the fact that once again the medical staff at the hospital didn't freaking listen to me! Like with my pregnancy, anything I told them fell on deaf ears. I told them straight after Anelise was born to check her for a TT, they had a little look & said no. I tried to put her on my breast and it was almost impossible. I asked once again for them to look for a TT. Once again I was told she didn't have one. I tried to get her to feed and it instantly hurt when she attached. I knew she had a TT and told the Dr that. I was brushed off. If they trusted me, Anelise would have had her TT snipped within the first few hours or days of her life. Instead I have missed out on close to 4 weeks of breast feeding with my daughter thanks to not being listened to by the medical staff at the hospital. I think it is bad enough they took away my dream of a home birth for my last baby, now they're taking away my breast feeding time too
Sorry.... I really, really needed to get all this off my chest.

Hi All,
I had a good appt with the LC on Friday, it seems a lot of my pain issues was because Emily wasn't latching on 100% correctly (despite the nurses in the hospital telling me she was doing fine!!! ). She has given me some pointers about getting her on correctly - I can definitely feel the difference when she does latch on correctly, none of the 'stabbing' pains at all, just a feeling of pulling/tugging more than anything. I'm still finding it hard to get her on properly, but practice makes perfect I suppose. I just need to keep taking her off and starting again whenever she doesn't latch on properly (Emily really loves that gets the sh**s big time - poor little love )
As for pain in my shoulders, I'm hearing you there Easha. I seem to get it more on my right side, but the LC said it is most likely because I'm not relaxing when feeding (hard to do when you're in pain). I'm now trying to make sure I relax my shoulders once Emily is feeding and this seems to be helping.
I'd definitely recommend that if you are having trouble with sore/cracked nipples, that you should talk to a LC as it has really helped me already after just a few days. I'm still sore, but can feel that it's getting better already.
Angela

Hi Everyone
Lisa - I can totally understand why you feel the way that you do. It is the reason that I left hospital 2 days after having a c-sect. Honestly, DH, with no medical experience, could take better care of me and our new baby at home. Argh! I feel so mad for you that they are not listening. I'm glad that you have an appointment now and it is going to be sorted out, but it is pathetic that it took them this long. It may surprise a lot of midwives and doctors to learn that we don't actually live in the dark ages anymore - women are well informed about their own bodies and babies and probably know more about what is going on with themselves than a textbook.
Angela - Glad that things went well with the LC and you are getting good attachment now.
Easha - My nipples often hurt for the first couple of sucks, but that is my letdown reflex starting (because the one not being sucked on also hurts). If you have cracked nipples there is a great product called Lansinoh (you can get it from the chemist) to rub onto your nipples. It is really good stuff and a lot of midwives recommend it (it is also safe for the baby). It is made from lambs oil and it is really thick so provides a good barrier while feeding if your nipples are really painful. Exposing your nipples to the air can be really good for them too. If you are making lots of milk, they can be moist a lot of the time which can lead to a fungal type of infection and they will get really really itchy. If you leave them out for a bit (and expose them to sunlight if you can) it is really good for them and will help them heal a little more quickly. If you can see a LC, she might be able to help out with some info on your baby's wind issues as far as feeding and burping go. I would see a LC before trying nipple shields because they can interfere with attachment and also your supply. They are designed for short term use only and the LC will be able to tell you how to use them in the best way for you and your baby. Hope all that info helps.
MHB - I cannot believe how fast time is flying!!! Your baby is already nearly 6 weeks. I wish there was a way to slow time down. Glad that you are enjoying him so much!
Savina - It is not easy having an unsettled baby. I hope that it is just a phase and she settles soon for you. I am struggling with the same thing but don't have as many older kids to balance into the equation as you do.
Leanne - I think I do have more milk in one side, but that is also because I think Xanthe feeds better from one side than the other. I had to express milk before she was born and also found it easier to get milk from one side than the other then. How is Josh going now? Has he settled a bit now that he is not having as much lactose?
AFM - We are doing well. I think most of Xanthe's bad wind issues from the other day were due to gastro which we all had. Yuck! She has settled down now - she still has wind but we haven't had another 11 hour crying session again (thank goodness).
I have a headcold. I am soooo annoyed! We went to dinner at my parents the other day and my brother and his gf, who live in a granny flat under my parent's house (whole other whinge), both had headcolds. Just as dinner was ready, they came upstairs to see if they could have dinner there too. They managed to give us all headcolds. Who goes near people with newborns and small children when they are sick??? It is sooooo rude! She is 38 weeks pg at the moment and very focused on herself (she is 18yo). Hopefully, they both get a clue after their baby is born and start to understand how yucky it is to have to deal with sick children. I am so over all of us being sick.
I also forgot to mention - when we took Xanthe for her check-up the other day, DH and I both got our whooping cough immunisations. They are free (at least in Qld) for both parents of any baby born after 1st May this year. It didn't hurt at all and I am a needle phobe. There has been an outbreak in Australia in the past year with hundreds more cases than normal which is why the immunisation is free for parents of newborns (because they are the most at risk). My parents are also going to have the immunisation done, but they have to pay for theirs - $40 each so it is not expensive. It is worth thinking about. DH also had the swine flu vaccine which I didn't have to have as my swab came back positive for swine flu. DH most probably had it too but they were only swabbing certain categories of people by the time we all got it, so DH was not swabbed and did not get official confirmation that what he had was swine flu so he got the immunisation as a precaution. They are encouraging parents of small children to have this immunisation too.
Anyway, that's enough from me for now. Hope everyone is loving their babies and having a great weekend

Leanne - how are you going with the booby feeds? Are they better now you are limiting dairy?
TG - the nappy rash has cleared with the bepanthen. But I have written canesten down into my mummy book in case I need it in the future. Hope the wind settles down for you both soon. I haven't had my WC shot yet... only because the nice doctor who gives nice needles (if there is such a thing!!) is on holidays until next week so will get it done then.
Easha - welcome to both you and Jaida. She was born on my little one's due date but Caitlin was born 6 weeks early due to my PE. Hope the wind settles soon. I have a fast letdown and if I am not careful Caitlin will often choke when the letdown happens, thankfully I can feel my let down but it was a very scary few weeks before I realised what was happening.
Angela - it can seem that the day is full on feed/burp/sleep/repeat. Hope there is some more variety to your day soon. I had to unattach and reattach several times when we went onto full suck feeds just before she came home from hospital but as you say it does feel so much better when they are attached correctly.
MHB - welcome back! I often look at Caitlin and get all emotional and overjoyed that she was in my belly.
Lisa - ouch! Hopefully the TT snip will get rid of the pain when BF. I do the same and express a bit of milk, rub it in and then leave my breasts to air dry. DP thinks it is funny when I am walking around with my feeding top pulled down on both sides LOL. I do have to watch though that I don't leak because if Caitlin cries or something whilst my top is down then I have lots of leakage. I am sorry that the doctors haven't listened to you once again. It must be so frustrating for you.
AFM - had Caitlin weighed last Thursday (we are still on fortnightly weighs at the moment) and she has broken the 4kg mark! In the two week period she put on 800g and went from 3.550kg to 4.350kg - we are now in 0000 suits! That is pretty much it for us... other than that it has been business as usual. Ok must away - Bathurst is leading up to the last few laps and even though I detest most sports... I have to watch the start and finish of Bathurst each year

Hi Girls just wondering if me and my little girl Laicee Kate can join this Baby buddies group Miss Laicee was born via c section on the 25th of September 2009 weighing 7 pounds exactly, 50 cm long. It is number 4 for me but feels like my first all over again lol you forget what complicated little creatures newborn babies are...Laicee is feeding well but is a little difficult to get the wind out of so gets a bit of a belly ache.
