Default suppliments during ttc and pregnancy

Hi,
While at the gynae the other day he gave me a calcium supplement which has folic acid in it as well as another vitamin supplement for during pregnancy.

My questions is... Do I have to take a special multi vit during pregnancy, or can I continue with my exisiting one, while adding folic acid to the daily intake? I already take calcium, which the pharmasist said was fine as long as I start with the folic acid, I just wanted to know if there is something "special" about preg vits.

Thanks in advance

Hi Kimi,
I take Elevit which is a pregnancy supplement. They have a website *please google*. So if you want to check the ingredients of this one against your multi vitamin you can see the difference (if there is any?)

It all depends on how much folic acid you are taking. Current guidelines are 500mcg day in a supplement. I think it is higher if you have had reccurent miscarriage or other problems. Discuss with your doctor or pharmacist for correct advice for you.

Hope this helps

i take elevit too and I am pg with no 2.
elevit is great as its gives you all of the vits and mins you need before, during and after pg and its the only clinically proven pg supp to reduce the risk of neural tube defects, including spina bifida. have a look at their website www.elevit.com.au as its really informative
lots of luck!!

vitamin a is definitely a no-no during pg but I am not entirely sure about the others so I would check with your ob.
i have taken elevit for both my pgs and have felt great during them - no m/s thankfully and peace of mind that i am doing the best for my and my bubbas. I personally think its a small cost to pay for a product that is clinically proven and highly recommended by both gp and ob.
enjoy the journey ensure to keep a good healthy diet up too!!

This thread is a bit old, but I wanted to put my 2c in.

Personally I am taking Blackmore's Gold + Fefol Iron, as there wasn't enough iron in the Blackmore's for me. I did not want to take Elevit, despite OB's recommendation, because it has no iodine in it, and after watching the ABC program "The Man who Saved a Million Brains" I was far too frightened to contemplate not having iodine. I can post the transcript of the program, or you could go to the ABC website and look for the program transcript- it's under Science and Technology.
Basically, since dairy farmers stopped cleaning their equipment with iodine, we have virtually no iodine coming into our diet at all- we used to get enough from dairy due to positive contamination. This deficiency leads directly to thyroid problems, eyesight problems and brain development problems- cretinism, in the medical sense of the word, is a direct consequence.
So I got the supplement with iodine. Oh, and I bought iodised salt.

(But those of you who've said that iron supplements have led to constipation- oh, I hear you! Not even half a packet of prunes gets things moving!)

Default fabfol plus

I have tried them all and fabfol plus is the best for me so far. Elevit made me constipated like you need that on top of everything else.. Doc tells me fabfol has a special type of iron that is better absorbed by the body and also I can buy it al woolworths for $22 for a 2 month pack..Abouth half the price of the others.
