Dentist and pg? Yay or nay?

Ok so some people tell me it's ok to go to the dentist while PG others say it's a big NO.
With DD i had bad teeth but persevered but this time round i have had shocking tooth aches for the last week and i can't deal anymore.
Last night i took some panadol before bed and layed awake for over an hour til it kicked in, then was up again at 2 with sore teeth.
DD woke and i just couldn't bear it, by 4am she was awake again my teeth were killing, i took more panadol and waited another hour for it to kick in, it had started giving me a headache!

Can someone let me know the deal, will be checking for local dentists today to see if anyone can fit me in!
Also anyone know a good dentist in south Morang Area?

I was 6-7months pregnant when I had two teeth pulled out. I had an absess and was on antibiotics and panadeine forte and nothing touched me. I couldn't have it removed until the absess was clearing but after a week they took it out. I wouldn't advise it if you didn't need to go (like for a check up etc) but if you have a tooth ache I would definately go. The drugs they use for any procedure is localised to that area (the mouth) and shouldn't be systemic (everywhere) well thats what I was told.
If there is a tooth problem I also wouldn't want to wait to have it treated as it might mean loosing that tooth later on or it been harder to fix.

Thanks heaps, booked an appt for 2:00pm tomorrow :-( i HATE dentists.. more the cost than anything else.
Told them i was PG and they didn't say anything so hopefully all is good, hopefully wont cost me an arm and a leg!

It is actually recomended that you go when pg, as pg hormones can cause gum problems.

Just make sure you also tell the receptionist when you turn up so it goes on your record, as well as the dentist seeing you..

The last few times I have been to the dentist, my PHI has covered everything except the Xrays (I went to a new dentist just before I fell pg with DS, so got the overhaul)..

Yes it is a good idea to get it checked out while pregnant as you don't want to get blood poisoning from decay or abcesses. You just need to let them know beforehand.

Perfectly safe hun . In fact recommended, you don't want anything to escalate while you're pg.

Just make sure you let them know (I guess it's probably obvious ), as the only thing they will need to consider is which anaesthetic to use (most are fine, but there are one or two that are unsafe for use during pg).

Hello lovely ladies, well i survived the dentits, a little worse for wear but feeling better.
Had 2 teeth pulled... OUCH 1 wisdom one on the bottom.. boy did that feel yuck and another one up the top.

Only costs me $260 which i think is quite reasonable.. 1 tooth per child right?

Have to go back after #2 and get x-rays and a check-up as i have always had crap teeth and don't want them all ripped out.. hehehe maybe it's time to look into PHI?

add extras now babe - hospital is a good idea - but get extras cover either way. most things have a three month wait, some longer - so it's a good idea to get it sooner rather than later

Hospital cover i am not so worried about, am happy being a public patient but i wear glasses and have **** teeth so prob should have gotten it years ago...

Yeah my jaw is still a bit achy today, felt like he had my jaw down to my (.)(.).. OUCH and that cracking sound nearly made me vomit.. ewwwww

ohh well it's done and fixed and didn't cost me $500 so i'm happy... lol not sure i can really afford PHI at the moment... anyone suggest a good one?
I tried looking at iselect yesterday but most said would be like $50wk for family PHI?

Hmmm, I would really recommend looking very carefully into what you will pay in premiums, and what you will get back on treatment. It's a well known fact in health care that private health insurers lose money in the hospital side, and make it on ancillary cover. There are definitely some situations where it's well worth taking out extras, just make sure that you are one of those people! Working in a dental surgery, with HICAPS, we see what people get back on their treatment, and they're usually not happy .

So glad the visit wasn't traumatic for you, and only cost $260 . If you go to the dentist regularly after having number two, and look after your teeth you will probably find that it won't cost you too much over all. It's often only when things get out of hand that problems escalate into being big ones.

LOL, yep the old saying is one tooth for each child, but it's because of the increased risk of gum disease during pg! These days people have much better gum health, so it's not so much of a worry. But don't worry, wisdom teeth don't even count most people either get them out or are born without them these days.

Thanks janie, i was lucky enough to be on my parents PHI up until about 2yrs ago so got some dental done then but i have always had crap teeth, was born with teeth and even those ones didn't like me.

I would def get extras as hospital cover is no major issues for me, dental and optical are a must as i wear glasses and so do 3 out of my 6 brothers so theres every chance my kids will need them.

If anyone can suggest a good fund i will do my research and see what DP says.

Well, if you think it's worth it for your family, then have a look into NIB or HCF. Most of the others give terrible rebates, top of that list being Medibank - steer clear of them!

i'm with Latrobe Health - pay 110 a fortnight with hospital (and we have top hospital with the ivf) - i think our extras are about $35 a fortnight and we have good cover for chiro/dental/optical

Yes, I should say that most of the smaller ones are better for extras - yours sounds good BG

You can take out extras on their own, if you're not interested in hospital.

avoid iselect for your research - it's a paid service for a few of the bigger companies. i know one of the team leaders there and said i was interested in what their best deal for our circs was - she got one of her team to call me - and it was going to be over $100 a month more for less stuff.

there is a govvie website that you can look at that compares all of them - but i found it a bit convoluted. plus it doesnt' allow you to customise what you're really after - just put in major things, not specifics. i've found Latrobe to be awesome - i have always gotten back more than i've paid (just on chiro and optical for me - DH makes it even more value given he needs glasses too). it started as a local fund but i think it's much bigger now (but still based local if that makes sense). the customer service is pretty good - and you can say you want x y and z and they'll run through the options. we get about 400 each in chiro/physio each year, 200 each on normal glasses, 50 on sunnies, and about 600 combined on normal dental 1000 on major dental. we don't necessarily use all of the dental each year (but have both had major dental surgery in the past few years so have well and truly used it before!) - but chiro and optical is a given - so we get back well more than what we pay. if you google latrobehealth (one word) it should come up.

they do direct debit fortnightly too - awesome help!
