Hi
I had my baby girl at Sunshine in July 2006. The prenatal care was great. I was a high risk and had visits every 4 weeks with a OB every time. I was induced at 38 weeks and the ladies in the day stay were just as good. The birth was attended by midwifes and my stiches were done by a specialist so I was happy with that.
After the birth was when everything went bad. I didn't sleep due to the noise of buzzes constantly going off. I rang the buzzer when my baby started to choke on junk from the birth stuck in her throat - no one came I ended up clearing her airways and still no one came. I left the next day after no one came near me for 12 hours. I got home less than 24 hours after my babies birth and it was the best thing I ever did.
To top it off 3 days after my baby was born she presented a staph infection which the doctors say was most likely picked up at the hospital. She was on antibotics for the first 4 weeks of her life.

Angel - I have a midwife only birth at the werribee mercy hospital.
I went trought my GP, but had team midwifery for all of my appoinments, and he came in for a bout a minute or so at the end of each, that was it.

Hi Everyone, I know that a year has passed since you were chatting about Sunshine Hospital. However, I am soon to be a new mother (Due Feb 09) and I was considering Sunshine Hospital. I will be new in the area as my husband and I will be moving to Melbourne in December. Can anyone give me an update on how Sunshine Maternity is? |

I transferred to Sunshine and found the staff to be really helpful. I was induced at 40 weeks, tried to have a natural birth, but after 12 hours ended up having a c-section(due to complications).
I was initially wary about going to this hospital, but I would definately give birth their again. The midwives were all very good.

Sunshine have changed one thing about their women's clinic. Now you arrive, take a number and go and sit down and wait for your number ot be called to see the lady at the desk to let them know you are there for your appointment.
Then, after you have had ALL your apts (for that day), you take a number (different stack of numbers), sit again, and wait to be called up again to make a new appointment, if need be. Its different, I'll give it that! At least you don't have to stand for ages at the desk waiting to be seen to though.

Hi, I'm new to this site and am also considering using Sunshine Hospital for my second child. I'm not pregnant yet, but would like to know what hospital I'll use first, just in case I should go private and need health insurance.
Since June 08, I believe there is a new system where you can visit a team of midwives and they guarantee one will be there for the birth. I think this is a fantastic idea and was wondering whether anyone has heard how this system is going?
FYI - I have just been advised that maternity tours at hospital are on the 1st saturday of the month at 1.30pm and you meet at the womens clinic.
Thanks

caseload is what u r talking about when you book in you inform them that you want to be part of it.
You see 1 midwife (maybe 2) during pregnancy and you call them for labour and they come to hospital with you and birth your baby and look after you postnatally and visit you at home.
Woman love the conituity of care and care giver.
ask any questions
good luck

thanks for your advice feeb & rayray. Much appreciated.
Good to hear so far its going well. Keep me posted on how things go and if you find their are any disappointing things you come across along the way...hopefully not!
Does anyone know whether you share a room their or can you get your own private room?
I have a big family, so having a private room would help, but not sure whether this is offered at public hospitals.
I'll try at make the hospital tour, so that should give me a better understanding of everything. |

double and single rooms available just depends on luck of the draw and whats avaialable.
Bonus is that u will know and trust your midwife so you could go home after 6 hours with midwife visiting you next day at home.
general length of stay if u choose to stay is 2 night normal birth 3 night cs

thanks feeb. when you say double, does that mean double bed or sharing with one other person? And do you know how many they have of each?
Yeah, think dealing with just midwifes sounds great.

Double as in 2 bed in room.
um there are more shared rooms than single there is about 6 singles rooms and 8 shared rooms numbers. these r not completly correct but there abouts
1 room with a double bed.
