| | To VALIUM or not to Valium???
hi,
i will be having my second FET soon and wanted to see if anyone had any good advice regarding the us of Valium before the ET. i also will be doing AP.
i have had 1 IVF fresh cycle and a natural FET and didn't use it in either.
i have now read that it relaxes the uterus not just you, so i am thinking that it would be an advantage to use it?
thanks

| | Hi kittycat27-
I just wanted to let you know that your right that valium can relax the smooth muscles in the uterus but it really should be used as a last resort for relaxation during an ET. I would recommend using AP as an effective and safer alternative for relaxation instead- especially should you get a BFP. The ADEC classifies Valium as a category C drug- drugs which, owing to their pharmaceutical effects, have caused or may be suspected of causing, harmful effects on the human fetus or neonate without causing malformations. These effects may be reversible.
If it were me, I would not be comfortable taking valium, knowing I could potentially be pregnant in 2 weeks as the safety of valium in pregnancy has not been established. I realise you only intend to use it for your ET but again, if it were me, I wouldn't want any unnecessary drugs in my system at all but ultimately, it's your body and your decision. Perhaps you should ask your FS what he/she thinks. Anyway that's my humble opinion, I hope I have helped in some way and wishing you the very best of luck for your next FET.

Dutchie, I believe the description of the safety of valium in pregnancy is just referring to if valium is used during the later stages of pregnancy, then the baby can be born with a slight dependence on it. Using valium at embryo transfer isn't going to have any impact at birth.
My antidepressent medication had the same description - it wasn't going to cause any long-term problems, but may just mean that if I was still on a high dose at birth, the baby would go through withdrawals afterwards.
That said, if you have been able to relax enough for transfers to go without a hitch in the past, I see no reason to use valium now.

It might relax the uterus but it will also probably make you feel quite spaced out.
If you've managed before without it, I'd give it a miss.
AP should be enough to keep you relaxed.
Hugs and good luck.

No Way Hosay ...
I asked my GP for Valium and he wouldnt even prescribe it .. he knows I am using ART
He said it is a certain catorgry, and one that should not be used whilst TTC or pregnant.
Always ask you FS or GP about medications HTH

thanks girls,
i think i am just at that stage that i'll try anything. i will be speaking to my Ap lady and FS as he has not suggested it to me. it was simply something i read. i may not need it as i am so "spaced out" from taking the Ethinyl oestradiol. i start 3 tablets from today and have only been on two for three days. i feel sick most of the day and had to come home from work as i have a major headache. it is just one of the symptoms...
god what we put ourselves through..
thanks

It seems to be fairly common to use Valium in conjunction with ET over in the US. I've never really heard of it being used here that often.
GL and I hope you get some sticky embies!
