Default Day 3 v Blastocyst transfer

After last cycles disaster of getting 33 eggs, having 13 still going strong at day 3, and then none make it to blastocyst, we are going to have two embryos transferred at Day 3, but grow the rest to Day 5.

In the past we have always gone to blastocyst stage so I don't know much about Day 3 embryos and what our chances are. I have finally managed to convince the clinic to let me do a double transfer, which I guess ups the odds a bit more in our favour.

Is it possible that we can get pregnant from Day 3 embryos if we haven't been able to (bar our miscarriage) with Day 5 embies?

Bec, I have living proof sleeping in my lap right now. I had four blast transfers and three miscarriages resulting from them...

Our third stim cycle was looking to be a complete disaster - they'd taken me to EPU a little earlier to help avoid OHSS (managed it!) for a change, from 20 eggs we ended up with only 12 mature, but for some reason they could never explain only three of those fertilised...

The clinic would not grow to blast with so few embryos and so we transferred on day three. I now have a healthy 9 month old boy sleeping in my lap and two frozen day three embryos waiting at the clinic.

I don't necessarily think it was all about transferring on day three rather than day five, but it certainly is proof that blastocyst culture is not the be all and end all of IVF.

I think I have spoken to you before about the eating plan I was put on to help improve egg quality and avoid OHSS?

You have no idea how much better that makes me feel BW.
I'm so nervous about day 3 transfer, like there isn't much hope that it will work. I really don't want to have to move to donor sperm next year, this is our last shot and I want to do everything possible.

Can you remind me about the eating plan? Would love to get on that.

If you PM me your email address, I will send you the information that my FS gave me. It's basically just making sure you stick to a high protein, low carb diet and make sure that what carbs you do eat are low-GI (really important with PCOS). I got bad OHSS with two stim cycles until I followed the plan religiously through cycle #3. Almost religiously, I still ended up on daily blood tests and it was really obvious that the one day I slipped and ate a hamburger and chips nearly spelled disaster for the whole cycle.

I've put myself back on the eating plan for now, and have lost 3kg in 3 weeks - which is an added bonus to feeling a heap healthier and having more energy.

DH also has pretty poor sperm - he was instructed to ejaculate daily while I was on FSH injections and was also put on folate and vitamin C, but he was REALLY slack at actually taking them.

BecD, also want to wish you all the best for this cycle after the setback last time! I hope you have a much better outcome this time around. As you know I am still struggling to find the answer myself but I am sure things can just work out with no logical reason. I know Smithy got her BFP on Day 2 embies, so you just never never know.

Everything is crossed for you

I did all sorts of transfers including 2 blastocyst transfers and 2 day 3 transfers. The one that finally worked was a day 2. So definitely don't think that blastocyst is the only chance.

BW I swear I am reliving your cycle - We got 20 eggs at epu, only 12 mature, and only five have fertilised. I am praying like there is no tomorrow that I get your outcome as well xx

Bec, at least you know there is hope of a good outcome from that point. Will be praying right alongside you.

Bec - all 3 of my pregnancies were from day 2 or day 3 transfers. Lost them for reasons totally unrelated to the timing of the transfer.
