| Induction Education and Information When used appropriately, induction can be a life saver. But sadly, we know from statistics that induction is at an unacceptable rate - far from medical or psychological need. If you would like information or to chat about induction, please post here. | |

| | Being Induced on Monday and have a couple of questions..
I'm being induced on Monday morning as I will be 41+4 and I'm not coping well with being overdue, and bub is only getting bigger according to the u/s we had last week.
I'm going in on sunday night to get this strip thing put in behind my cvx (can't remember what it's called sorry) to soften it up and to get it to start to dilate, and I was wondering if anyone else has had the strip-thing in too and if it hurt? I've had quite a few internals and a a failed S&S already, so I'm sort of prepared, but still worried that it is going to hurt a lot more.
Then on monday morning my OB will be breaking my waters. None of my friends with kids have had to have this done, so they haven't been able to answer any of my questions about it. I was wondering what it is like? Does it hurt? How soon afterwards did the contractions start?
I'm probably just getting worried over nothing, but I like to know everything I can about something before I get stuck into it.
Thanks all

Cervadil is what they will insert, like a tampon which has a string for easy removal in case of hyperstimulation etc.
Here's all the details: http://www.bellybelly.com.au/article...-or-not-induce
Have you thought about natural methods for induction, like acupuncture etc? Less side effects and perfectly safe for you and baby. I think an important thing to remember is if you think induction will help with the tiredness, lack of sleep etc dont forget life with a newborn is more of the same The best way to avoid a c/s is to avoid an induction of labour.

Thank you for the link. It's really helpful.
I've been talking to my OB about the possibility of an induction if I went more than a week over since I was 36 weeks, just to make sure that I knew all the risks and complications that could arise from it, and it was only on thursday when I broke down at the hospital that she booked me in. Before then I'd been coping ok and managing to get by day to day, but on thursday something just snapped in me and I burst into tears and just couldn't stop crying. I've had high blood pressure and twice weekly monitoring for the past 3 weeks as well, and bub's heart rate has been quite high, so it's not just for my mental health, it's also for bub's health that we're choosing to go through with it on monday instead of waiting until after christmas.
We're also trying to avoid going on the drip, so thats why we tried the S&S first, which didn't do anything.

Having your waters broken can be painful depending on how easy it is for them to actually get to them and also depending on the person who does it too - some are a little rougher than others. But for the most part it is just very uncomfortable. I hope that it all goes well for you and that you don't have to have synctocinon.

Jenna,
I really hope your little man decides to come before you have to go through all this. Have you tried walking, DTD and all the other things they say should help? Silly question, sorry of course you have. Hang in there and try and keep your chin up. I really hope that you don't have to worry about all those things but if you do then I hope that it all happens quickly and no where near as uncomfortable as you may be expecting.
Thinking of you and big hugs!

Hi. My DD was born at 41+4, and i too had monitoring for high BP for the last 3 weeks of my pregnancy - i could have written your post!
I didn't consent to induction. My cervix was not favourable (it was high, posterior and closed) until the last few days before DD was born (it softened, opened enough to allow a stretch and sweep and come forward enough that i could easily reach it myself) and i knew i would probably end up with a section anyway. If your cervix isn't favourable (which it sounds as if it isn't, given they already know you'll need the gels) your risk of having a c-section in the end is pretty high. I know the ob tells you to think of your health and baby's health, but induction and c-section are both dangerous to you both, far more dangerous than waiting, especially as you aren't at term (42 weeks) yet. I felt massive at the end, i was SICK of waiting and of everyone and their dog asking me if i'd had the baby yet, everything ached, i couldn't sleep properly, i was hungry but so full of baby cooking was hard and i could only eat a few bites anyway, my back ached - i could go on! I got really really weepy too and everything seemed so huge and difficult and i just wanted the baby OUT of me, or to run away and hide somewhere and never come out again - all signs of impending labour, and not something to make critical decisions based upon, just my opinion.
It was hard waiting, i won't lie - i was booked for an AROM (artificial rupture of membranes) when i was 42weeks, but i doubt i'd have gone even then unless bubs was ACTUALLY in distress. You mention baby has a high heart rate - how high? Is the FHR climbing on each visit? And is it climbing when bubs is asleep and still or only when s/he is kicking? Does it stay above 160bpm for more than 2 mins at a time? If it's baseline is under 160bpm and does not remain above 160bpm for more than a moment or two when baby is not active then your baby, by the definitions of normal medical practice, is fine. Unless your baby is already in distress induction is far more likely to CAUSE distress than waiting is.
I really hope your baby comes before Monday so you don't have to consider all this at all!
Christmas will come. So will your baby. Whatever happens i wish you the best of luck and that both days (or only one if bubs comes on Christmas day!) leave you with memories you can cherish.
Bx

I had the gels and my waters broken with DS and neither hurt. My contractions started an hour or two (though not painful really just noticeable) and continued all night and when they checked my cvx the next morning I was 2cm dilated. DS was born 8 hours after they broke my waters.
Wishing you luck and hope all goes well!

Just wanted to let you know I had cervidril with both ds's and responded very quickly to it both times, with ds1 my waters broke spontaneously about 5 hours after the tape was inserted and contractions started straight after that and I went on to have a VB without the drip and with ds2 contractions started pretty much as soon as the tape was in waters broke spontaneously about 4 hours later and ds arrived about an hour after at 3.35am, about 6 hours after the cervidril was inserted. I hope everything goes well for you and you can avoid the drip, keeping upright and moving around during labour will help things along too.

Thank you all. You helped calm me down quite a lot as I was stressing about it all.
I didn't get to reply sooner as I ended up needing to have an emergency c-sectioon anyway, my pelvis was too small for my little man to come out naturally, and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

I was induced. Went into the hospital the night before to have the fist lot of gel applied to my cervix then a second application about 530am. My Dr came and broke my waters at 730am (which didn't hurt) and inserted the drip. from that point on I was in so much paaaiiinn!!!!. I tolerated it for about 30 mins, the midwife then suggested i try the shower as the hot water is meant to help ease the pain - YEAH RIGHT!!!! I could bearly stand up in the shower. I gave up on that idea after no more than 2 minutes. She then suggested i try the gas...I was in that much pain that the last thing I could do was concentrate on sucking in the Gas. By this stage i needed the Epidural. We informed the mid-wife and what seemed like an eternity (well it was actually cause the Anethisist was busy elsewhere). After prehaps an hour the Anethesist arrived and finally the pain disappeared!!! I was so peaceful and even rang my dad and had a nice chat.
Not sure I would ever want to be induced again but am a definate fan of the epidural!!!!!!!!!!
