Default private cover - clinics etc etc.

Hi guys,

Ive been lurking for a while but havent posted in a bit...life is just so busy

Anyway, My DP and i are now back on track and getting things organised to see the clinic some time in July.

I was just sitting here pondering about health cover. I have cover but not pregnancy related cover yet (is something i will do asap).
For those that have used a clinic, what parts of the process are covered by private health cover? Do you NEED pregnancy cover during the stages of going through the clinics or is that more for once the baby arrives (im not up with all this stuff and have been thinking i should get my head wrapped around it pretty soon)

If anyone has any wisdom in this area i would love to hear it

Thanks guys,

Hope everyone is going well

Check it out ASAP because I think some make you wait 12 months from upgrading cover to fertility and preg/birth related cover. As for how much it covers during the TTC and clinic journey, you'll have to check out your policy because theyre all different, some only cover inpatient treatments, and not outpatient, so are fairly useless for IUI procedures.

Good luck xxx

Hey Milara,

Glad to hear that you are getting back on track.

We are still going through screeds of testing and things, but hope to be getting started with the actual process in June/July. We are also faced with the whole private cover thing.

In our search we found 2 companies that provide cover with only a 9 month waiting period for maternity and obstetric services - La Trobe, and Teacher's Federation Health. You have to have a relative in the Teacher's Federation health, or be a teacher to be able to access it, but La Trobe anyone can access, and it recognises Gay families/couples. We haven't actually joined one yet, but that is my job for the next couple of days - trying to make a decision! Maybe not such a good idea given that I have been on Night Duty lol!

If you are wanting private health for the actual clinic stuff you need to make sure you have a policy that covers IVF/ART - which means it may cost more - and I am not sure what the waiting periods on it might be.

We are going to Flinders IVF because it bulk bills a lot of it's stuff and the cost per cycle is about $1200 - $2000 (with donor sperm) depending on what needs to be done. Of course this might all change too if the medicare predictions come true - and IVF is removed from the safety net.

Anyway, glad to hear that all is going well. Fingers crossed for some fantastic results for the up coming months

Default speaking of safety net

hello everyone

I was reading what you typed about the possibilty of scrapping the safety net for IVF treatments. I am curious about this and have been trying to read up on it but can't find any articles about it on the net. Any ideas?

I go with Leasha on the IUI process, medicare covers (at the moment) 75% of surgical costs at the clinic we are going to be using, this and the fact that my doctor kind of mentioned (somehow I dont think she was supposed too) that there was really no point of buying into private insurance where we live and once we gave birth then thats when we should be stepping into it.
check with your clinic millara to see what if any benefits there would be if you had any private insurance.

cheers
