Hi all,

Just some food for thought... posts by bath and Kaz in another thread got me thinking...

There is a generally misconception amongst the oublic that having a homebirth is an inherently risky thing to do- an underlying assumption that if you homebirth, you are putting yourself and your child at risk. We've all seen it plenty of places- my dh said to me while I was in labour that the hospital was 'the safest place to be', my MIL cried after dd was delivered because 'anything could have happened, without a dr here!'. My mum was horrifed when her work colleagues intially assumed i had planned a homebirth, not had one accidentally.

And i am contributing to the stigma. When the subject of dd's birth comes up, I always add a disclaimer- "She was born at home..by accident". I even went and edited the link in my sig to say 'accidental'. And it's because i don't want people to think I planned a homebirth= I don't want them to think i was risking my baby's safety. I know that's not true- I know how safe and peaceful homebirths can be. yet i still feel the need to protect myself from accusations of being a 'hippy' ;) and the negative connations that seems to bring. I think it might be time to stop doing that, and just smile and say proudly "She was homebirthed" and leave it at that.

I'm so glad i had a bit of an education (thanks, BB) in how good hb can be, and how safe it really is, and how birht is not, by it's nature, a dangerous thing to do. It was the "BB Brainwashing" (as my dh so nicely puts it) that stopped me from being scared ****less during dd's birth.

This is a question for those who've had an attended homebirth. How many birth attendents did you have? Were they all necessary or were any superfluous? Did you have midwives and a doula? If so, were their roles different?

I'm meeting a private midwife for pre-conception talk this weekend, & will ask her, but would also appreciate feedback from those who've been through it. I know she does dual-midwife homebirths. I'm happy about that - 1 for me and 1 for the baby, or to take over if it takes hours and they get tired. I'm just wondering if there is any point having a doula as well (apart from the cost issue). I don't want the house to get crowded or be overwhelmed by lots of people looking at me (house is pretty open plan). But if it helps me or DH to also have a doula, I'm open to it.

For any who had trainee doulas or midwives, can you also give me your experience, either here or PM.

Thanks

2 midwives vs. doctor / midwife

We are planning a home birth for our first baby, due in June next year.

I had planned to use a midwife (Jan Ireland) as my lead carer, and to attend the birth. Now, Jan uses a second midwife for home births, to support her.

Last night, I was at my GP, who often works with Jan (Peter Lucas). He mentioned that I could either have the 2 midwives, OR have him, with Jan as his support. He said that, while he supports either choice, he feels that there is some arguament for having a doctor attending a first home birth.

I need to decide within the next ten weeks as, if he is NOT going to attend the birth, he cannot continue to provide care until after the birth (insurance reasons).

SO now I am trying to decide whether I want Jan plus another midwife, or Peter plus Jan? Ideally, I want Jan as the 'lead midwife', delivering the baby, but I am starting to wonder if it might be nice to have Peter there too, as it is a first baby?

Hi Everyone :)
I'm just doing my research atm to calm my nerves about labour. This is my first baby and i have a pretty low pain threshold so the thought of labour is scaring me somewhat. I do however love my hot showers and baths and the idea of a waterbirth is very appealing to me. Does anyone know if Ipswich hospital (public) offers the option of waterbirth or just during your labour and not the actual birth. I can't seem to find any info on the hospital website and didn't think of it at my appointment last week to ask.
