Hearing Test ~ How?

DS will be 18mo.

He has a history of bad ear infections, we took him to the paed. who doesnt think that there has been any long term damage from them as he babbles and talks quite well and startles okay. As a precaution though we were booked in for a hearing test jic.

DS hasnt had his hearing tested since he was newborn and even then I wasnt present as I was too ill. So Im just wondering how are they conducted and what should I expect? How long do they take generally?

TIA :)

DD1 has parvo virus. Not actually slap cheek (she had that as a baby), but another strain of it & DS is also coming up in the lovely red rash.
I know that the contagious period is past, but should I be careful still?
A close friend of mine is in her first trimester & I'm wondering if I should avoid her til they are both cleared up?
DD1 went back to school today, even though I've never seen a rash quite that bad. Gp said it was ok. I put that in the note for the school, but I'm kind of thinking I might still get a call to pick her up.

DD has a little rash on the back of her neck, it's like tiny red dots in a bit of a strip across her back kind of between shoulders but up a bit higher. It doesn't seem to be worrying her, but I just freaked a bit when I saw it! She had a few spots there last night but there seems to be a lot more tonight. It has been quite warm weather here for a little while and she has lots of hair. The back of her neck often seems a bit sweaty when I get her up from a sleep, would it be a heat rash?

Is there anything I can/should do to treat it/make it go away?

I beside myself, my sisters little 11day old baby admitted to hospital last night with strep b infection they believe. This morning she is struggling to breathe and is having chest xrays now. Maybe airlift to Perth. Does anyone know anything or had experience with strep b in a newborn. I just want to be there for my sister but my DD has a cold, coughing, sneezing and really snotty so I can't be near them at the moment. I feel terrible because my sister was there for me when DD was in neonatal unit. Please share what you know. I've googled it and know it isn't good.

DD had her 12mth needles today and we agreed to do the allergy testing... i knew it was going to happen but she had a reaction to one of them.
I will get the results as to which product in 1-2wks, then we get a FREE follow-up with an allergy specialist... glad it's free, if we did it ourselves and got a Dr's referral would have cost over $300... CRAZY
I am assuming it's egg as she seemed to have a reaction last week.. :crossfingers:

_Ok so what i want to know is who else has been through this, how long did it take for results and what should i ask at the specialist, are there certain things i should know before going?
_
Chances are we wont get in until Jan/Feb (great #2 will be here then.. fun fun fun) and it's about 4hrs at the Royal Childrens putting her through tests... poor girl.

So NO NEW FOODS for Ava until possibly Jan/Feb, she eats a wide range of things but she wont get the joys of peanut butter or nuttela just yet!

So glad we found out now...

Thanks in advance everyone!

Ok. More drama in this house than I can deal with

DS has an infection in his penis. He is very sensitive anyway & fell asleep with poo in his nappy yesterday & I think that set it off.

His whole penis a bit red & swollen yesterday, & weeping. Today its heaps better, but still not 100%.

My gp gave me bactroban for when we have issues like this. I was thinking about going to get him some antibiotics, but then looked up bactroban & its actually an antibiotic cream anyway.

I'm just bathing it 3 - 4 times a day (more if needed), to keep it clean & pulling his foreskin back just enough to open it up so I can get the bactroban in there (not far enough to do damage).

It is almost 100% better & I think it will be by tomorrow, but should I get him abs anyway? Is the bactroban enough? I'm thinking it is since its working, but I don't really wanna be putting it off if he needs something else iykwim?

TIA

Yesterday Ds 2 Isaac (6 yrs) woke with a snotty nose (just like Ds3 and DD) I didn't think anything of it. by lunch time however he had a very wheezy chest. Anyways fast forward. I rang Dh at 4:00 to come home from work as I was very concerned about Isaac's breathing. it was like he was having sme sort of Asthma thing. I am an asthmatic and can see the symptoms. Isaac has never had a chest infection. So dh took Isaac to the hosp just after 5. They took him straight out the back. He had 3 breathing treatments (ventolin thru nebliser) they gave him a 4th one before he left but this one was through the puffer.

He has come home on ventolin 3 times a day (more if required) and prednisone. Dr think it was a virus which was causing his airways to constrict. He said he didn't want to say it was asthma (yay a Dr who doesn't just diagnose for the sake of it) as it was a one off event.

has anyone elses child been fine then go to that? It really was out of the blue.

Wht do you think we should do now? I was thinking a follow up visit tomorrow with our GP and go from there. The hosp Dr wants him on the puffer and prednisone for a few days

I have a beautiful 5+ month old baby boy who had hydrocephalus.
This was not present in any U/S while I was pregnant and was only really picked up when he was 2 months old.
It has been monitored since then and when he was sent for U/S at 4 months which then our Paed suggested a MRI which was done a week after.
Paed said that there is a moderate amount of fluid however at this stage no treatment required.
I saw our clinic nurse yesterday for a monthly check up who advised me that I should see our paed again as his HC has gone from 44.3 to 46 in 5.5 weeks.
Anyway am seeing him this morning and just wanted to know if anyone's bubs have had Hydro but treatment wasn't required OR is treatment always required??

Thanks in advance.

Worried and confused mum

Hi
DS is sick - just with a cold. The usaul snotty nose and bit of crankyness, not really hungry, all that doesn't worry me. Myself and dh had gastro on Tuesday (today's Thursday), me worse than dh. Ds had 2 bouts of vomiting Tuesday night, but then was fine. Yesterday and so far today, he's not wee'd at all. Yesterday he whipped it out to do a wee (but that's not unusual, he seems to always have it out!), would say "come out wees" then "all done" but not actually do anything. He's drinking enough, but I will give him more. His nappy overnight was wet, but not overly so as if he stored it up, just normal. He sat on the potty this morning, but nothing. He's wearing undies all the time, so I'd know if it happens...

What else can I do?

Sorry - this is long!!!

My DD1 has a peanut allergy and when we had her re-tested yesterday it showed that her allergy is still significant and she is also allergic to brazil nuts. We were hoping she would grow out of her peanut allergy but it doesn't look like this is likely to happen.

Anyway the Murdoch Institute at the Royal Children's is conducting a study into the effectiveness of a new treatment for peanut allergy where they give the children peanut oral immunotherapy (increasing amounts of peanut) plus a probiotic to see if it results in tolerance or desinsitisation to the allergin.

So they are looking for children to participate in this and they will go into one of 2 groups - a treatment group or a placebo group (you don't get told what your group is).

I am debating at the moment if I should nominate DD1 to partake in the study. It will take a lot of time but potentially she could become tolerant or desensitised to her allery, or she could have no benefit. She could also be in the placebo group and get no outcome. But if the study shows that it is effective then it could be a fantastic new treatment (as opposed to just avoiding nuts and carrying an epi-pen). So even if she gets no personal outcome it could be a treatment for her in the future, as well as for lots of other children.

I guess I'm asking for thoughts and feedback and if anyone else has any experience with putting their kids through medical studies???

DD is 20 months old so she's had all her infant/toddler vaccinations and not due for any more until she's 4 years old.

Is it still possible for a child who has been immunised against it to get whooping cough?

Hi all,

I am just wondering what your point of view is on Lachlan getting chicken pox.
Hamish has chicken pox at the moment and got them pretty badly, we are just about at the end of it for him, he picked it up from school as other kids in the class had it.
I have had Hamish home all week as well as Lachlan.
Lachlan is 16 months and hasn't had his chicken pox immunisation yet. He is all over Hamish in fact all three kids always play together.
Emma has had chicken pox before the boys came along.
Im just wondering what the chances are that Lachlan will get them. I had a bit of hope that the fact that i'm still bf him may help..
Also how long would it take before he starts showing signs, and what do I do. Do i stay home just in case he gets them once Hamish is all clear ?

ThanksTania

Do you take a vomiting toddler to the dr?

I know, I know, its such a dumb question.... and the answer is probably yes...

Ok, so I'lls tart by saying I'm not really worried. I think she's got a tummy thing, her poo's have been so gross, and I've been putting it down to teething, but this morning I got her out of bed and breastfed her, and she spewed it all back up. About 90 minutes later she came and cuddled into me, and wanted a feed... I ummed and ahhhed and then fed her. Nup, spewed that back up too...

Then about 2 hours after that I gave her vegemite toast, it seemed to perk her up a bit, then she had a little sleep but I heard a tiny gag on the monitor about 15 minutes ago, so I went in a got her up. She was still asleep but I didn't want her to vomit in her sleep. 5 minutes later, up comes the toast

I tried to give her some water, she kept it down so far but gagged on it so I didn't push it.

Oh and she's going really pasty and cold just before she vomits.

She ate her dinner last night, and had a feed at 1am this morning with no problems?

She's never had the vomits (in fact, she's only done one or two this year!) so I don't really know what to do. Do I take her to the dr? Or do I just give her cuddles and sips of water every now and then? Is there anything a dr can even do? Apart from saying "she's sick with a tummy bug".

We also have apple juice, but I've heard that isn't really that great for vomiting/dehydration, but I can't remember why...?

DS has been quite ill, it will have been for a week tomorrow. the whole story so far is detailed in this thread http://forums.bellybelly.com.au/forums/childrens-medical-conditions/115125-so-annoyed-gp.html
All the doctors I have spoken to (4 in 4 days..:shakehead:) have all said he would be better by now, he is not.
I dont know what I should do, is it normal for kids to have such high temps for this long? panadol today has only reduced his temp from 39+ down to 38.....
I have had to cancel his birthday party tomorrow, I am just so worried, its ok during the day, but when he wakes up screaming at 2am, with a high fever and shaking uncontrollably and absolutely inconsolably I get so scared.
He has lost a bit weight this week too, not eating, only drinking water and the occasional BFeed, he used to be in a size 1 and now he is in an 0 and they are baggy.

DD has a gunky eye... her left eye came out in this kind of light green gunk this afternoon. I squirted a few drops of BM into it and got a soft tissue (we didn't have cotton balls at the time) to wipe away the gunk that came out.

Since then it has become a lot more gunky so I searched BB and saw suggestions about BM, cooled boiled water, teas etc.

We just wiped her eyes with the cooled boiled water on cotton balls (DP went and got some) and used a new one with each wipe. Then I expressed some BM onto a new cotton ball and wiped it over her eye as she is asleep and I don't want to open her eye to squirt it in there.

Is what I am doing right? Is that how I 'apply' the BM and the cooled boiled water.

I have rung my friend as we were visiting her and her 4yo DS today to let them know in case they get it and I am about to ring my family as we were over there this afternoon... anyone else I should contact? ie how far back could DD have had this?

Thanks in advance ladies

Hi all,

Well its been confirmed today that my poor 6 yr old DS has chicken pox. Today is his first day of them and he hasnt been to bad. Its hot here 33 degrees so I'm basically trying to keep him cool.
He suffers in the heat and always gets heat rashes so i'm trying to avoid this. He also has hyper sensitivity so he doesnt like loud sounds, strong smells and different textures.

I have just put him in a bath with pinetarsil and he started crying because of the smell.
Is there anything i can do to stop the itch, he has had some antihistamines .

thanks

2 weeks ago I came down with a cold, which turned into a severe headcold then the flu all within a few days. I never get sick so this has been so horrible, where the hell does all the snot come from. Georgia seemed to escape the sickness but got the runny nose which has been running for 2 weeks now. Now in the last couple of days she has developed a cough which is waking her up at night. I had her at the Dr's today because she had a bad fall but that is another story. But while i was there I told him about the cough and he listened to her chest and said it sounded fine. We are going back tomorrow in relation to the fall so I will get him to check her out a bit more.

In the meantime is there something I can give her or do for her to help her get over it better. I have been using saline spray for her nose which has helped but its the cough I am more worried about. Is there any natural remedies, could I maybe see a chinese herbalist/accupuncture etc

so annoyed with GP

Jacob is sick, Again. :shakehead: has had a high temp for 3 days now (39.5) went to GP yesterday (earliest I could get in) DS had a double ear infection a few weeks back, thought it might be the same thing, except he has tis funny little cough thing going on as well, and has been screaming for about 3 hrs every night (12-3am)

The GP looked in his ears and gave him the all clear, took his temp (39.3) and looked at his throat and DS promptly threw up all over him. I was told it was Tonsilitis, given script for ABS and told to 4 hrly dose with panadol etc.

got script, gave him a dose and some panadol, he had a sleep,...........next dose, more panadol, bath and bed etc, as soon as went to have a feed (still BFing) he threw up his dinner all over me and our bed.

Last time he was sick I had trouble giving him panadol, he would just throw it straight back up, so I rushed out and bought some suppositories, not fun, but it worked, he had a feed then went to sleep.
woke at around midnight, screaming, fed him first, then he came off and threw up the entire feed all over me, and kept chucking, temp was 39.5, he was shaking and twitchy, got another supp in, then he had a massive diarrhea poo, which made the supp pretty useless.
At this pointI got scared, I rang the parents helpline who told me to give him another supp, and take him to hospital, so I did. In that time DS had thrown up around 6-8 x.
I pulled myself together and jumped in the car with DS, got to hospital at around 2am, by this time DS temp had gone down and he was being his cheeky self, charming the doctor and nurses.
So the Doc at ED says that its possibly a reaction to the ABs, he also said that DS has no signs of tonsilitis, his tonsils all looked clear but his throat was a little red, he told me to give him another dose of ABS this morning, but if he started chucking again not to give him anymore. If his temp went back up and the symptoms continued over the next 24hrs to take him back in to ED.

We got home at around 5:30am, DS asleep straight away, then he woke at 7am and had another feed and threw up allover me again, temp was back up to 38, gave another supp, then he had another poo, diarrhea again. He went back to sleep.
Woke at 10am, gave panadol by mouth this time, no chucks,
I rang a pharmacist friend of mine and asked if he thought I should be giving DS the ABs, he said if it was his kids, he wouldnt. so I havent.

so now I am at a bit of a loss as to what to do or think, am considering making another Doc appt, but I wont get in anywhere for another day or so, by which time this might all be over, DS still has a temp but he hasnt chucked now since 7am. I am giving him lots of water, which he is guzzling down, lots of BFs, he isnt interested in food.
I just really dont want to have another night like last night. :shakehead: My poor baby, It hurts so much to see him in such obvious distress, and there is not a lot I can do about it.
I suppose this is more of a vent and a rant than anything. If you read all this, Thankyou, you deserve a chockie and a lie down. x

If you read all this, Thankyou, you deserve a chockie and a lie down. x

blood traces in 3/4 month old;s poop?

DS just had his 4 month vaccs this afternoon. His first poop pretty much within 10min of of vaccs had traces of blood in it, a mucous-y poop. His next one also (about 2 hours later) had some traces in it, again mucousy. I'm seeing the dr tomorrow afternoon about DS's dry skin and figured I'd bring it to his attention. Just looking for reassurance that it's okay to wait that long to see someone about or if I should hit the panic stations.:dunno:

one year old swallowing probs

Has anyone used speech pathology services to help their child with swallowing/feeding problems? Was it worthwhile, or do you feel your child grew out of the problems? What kind of strategies did they use? Were they effective?
I know all kids are different but I`m considering what to do.The therapists which have been reccommended are in East Brisbane so quite convenient. DD does okay with chewing but swallowing even mushy food is at times problematic but adding more liquid to the food and allowing her to drink as much as she want during meals has improved matters.

Bad reaction to Dermaveen Baby moisturiser

Hi all
I got some samples of the new Dermaveen Baby line from the parenting expo the other week.
We have used dermaveen before (ds has eczema and very dry skin) so I didn't think to do a patch test and just slathered it on him after his shower last night.
He started screaming and crying almost as soon as I finished and we had to put him back in the shower to wash the whole lot off.
I can't imagine what they could have put in the stuff, I would have expected it to be a milder version of their usual stuff, but there you go.
Just be careful, because you just never know
Cheers

Home from hospital - DD has a UTI??

DD has not ben well over the weekend - she was running a temp on and off and off her food and bottles, I thought it was teething as she is getting her eye teeth atm.

This morning I got her up to give her her bottle and she vomited up bright yellow bile, so I put her in the car and took her staight to the Emergency Dept. They ran some tests and it apprears that she has a UTI - she is now on antibiotics so I hop ethey kick in ASAP.

She is asleep now but still has a temp and will only have a suck on her sippy cup with water. I have given her a few luke warm baths to try and break the temp but she is still all shakey and just so sick and miserable.

I am so very worried about her - I wish she would eat and drink!

Has anyone elses little ones had a UTI?? Did they recover fast??

Possible wrist fracture

I got home from work today and noticed that DD was not using her right hand/arm to push herself up, or pull herself up onto the lounge. I kept an eye on her, and then decided a quick trip to the doctors wouldn't hurt. Anyway long story short, the doctor eventually saw her behaviour and said to bring her in for an x-ray tomorrow morning for check for a greenstick fracture.

Has anyone's little one ever had an x-ray at 15 months, what is involved etc and anyone's little one had a wrist fracture? Just want to know what they do to fix the problem, timeframes etc.

Thanks!

Massive newborn head lump from vacuum

My newborn has a very large lump on the top right side of his head after the vaccum was needed during my emergency CS (in my ob's words, "he was a bit stuck"). We were originally told this is fluid under the scalp and it would disappear in five days. 12 days on, no change. He looks incredibly lop-sided. We are seeing the paediatrician next week, but I was wondering if this happened to anyone else out there in BB land, how long it lasted, and if it left a depression in the scalp when the swelling finally disappeared?

Hope I have posted this in the right place...
