Hi
I'm rather confused about expressing. I would love some questions answered! they are below. They don't need answering on here, even just a quick link to a good article online about expressing, that would answer my questions.

My dd is 3 weeks old on monday, she is fully breastfed at the moment and I intend to carry on for a while longer, but I would like to have a supply in the freezer as a back-up, 'just incase'.

-my baby is 3 weeks old, will expressing affect how much she receives? I would hate to express if she then wasn't going to get enough

-when is the best time to express? before or after feeding dd?

-how much will dd need per feed? I will probably use breast feeding storage bags. Do I just keep adding to the bags?

-when is the best time to introduce an ebm bottle? (best age for dd?) our breastfeeding is going well, could introducing an ebm bottle cause problems?

dd is currently feeding on demand, though on average every 3 hours at night, every 2-3 hours in the day.

I have ordered a cheap manual pump for now, to see how we go.

Thank you :)

my little girl Georgia is nearly 10.5months old and I am nearly 8 weeks preg, I originally planned on BF for 6 months but that came and went and we have had a wonderful journey even through the arrival of teeth and biting ouch!!!

I think i would like to wean when she is one but I dont really know where to start, I dont want to put her onto cows milk straight away but what formula should I use and should I start to introduce some now. She has never had a bottle so do I give it to her in a sippy cup??

I dont wish to tandem feed.

Any help/advice would be much appreciated I really have no idea how to wean or what to expect.

What is going on with my left nipple?

So I've been breastfeeding for about 4.5 months now. Getting everything going was really difficult because I had inverted nipples (the left one was really bad), so I used up nipple shield for the first 8 weeks. After we dropped the shield we got it down pat and feeding has become a real joy.

However over the last couple of weeks my left nipple has started to hurt while DS feeds. It's not constant and I check his attachment which is really good. At first I thought it had been damaged a bit because for a few days there he would push back on my breast while sucking which would stretch it iykwim. But he stopped that and I still got the pain occasionally. Then I noticed this tiny little lump on the tip of it, when I squeezed a tiny bit of think white stuff came out (not sure if if was pus like a pimple or dried milk). After that it went away, but then came back a couple of days later. I wondered if I had a blocked duct, but cannot find any lumps or any signs of it.

The pain I get is quite sharp, it's not actually in the nipple but within the breast iykwim. It's nowhere near this little pimply thing that keeps coming back. It lasts for a couple of seconds and then stops and starts. But it is not there all the time, and usually doesn't start till a couple of minutes into the feed. Which makes me wonder if it has to do with let down, but then I don't get it when I express.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas. I'm thinking about going to the GP, but don't really want to unless it is necessary. I'm pretty sure it's not a blocked duct or thrush or anything, but have wondered if it has to do with my inverted nipple, mind you I did think that had corrected itself...

I am after opinions on the Medela Swing?

My little girl is 4.5 months old and has been exclusively breastfed from birth which I am hoping to keep up until at least 12 months. We have a few events coming up where we need someone to look after her therefore I need to pump!

So I guess I am wondering if it is worth spending the money on it?

TIA :)

I was recently given an Avent steriliser (I think it's called the digital steam steriliser), which is fabulous!

However, I find that when it's finished everything has a really odd smell. Has any one else found this? I've stopped using it until I know that it's normal. DH thinks I'm smelling things, but it's really strong!

Thanks :D

6 month old BFFT and AF has returned??

Ok silly question but advise would be greatly appricated.

I have a 6 month old baby boy who is bf and AF arrived for the first time this monring.
I guess I just want to know:
Is it too early for AF to have returned since I am feeding full time?
Will bubs get very fussy on the boob?
Will AF do anything to my milk supply?
Does this mean I start to cycle again every month??

I told you silly question :rolleyes:

Thanks in advance :D

Confused about weaning (long)

Hi all,

DS is 13 months old and still bf - 3-4 feeds a day. He doesn't really "ask" for feeds, but is rather enthusiastic when offered! I'd always aimed to wean at about 12 months old, but now that we're here I'm feeling a bit unsure and confused. DH was quite keen for me to "just stop" on his 1st birthday, but I successfuly got around that by saying I'd get mastitis if I did that (true!) and that I wasn't sure how to stop, since it was such a part of our routine.

Complicating matters further is the fact that he's not tolerating other milks very well, but that's another post.

I'm sure that if I stopped offering feeds all the time that he would quite easily drop them, without tooooo much trouble, maybe.

The thing is that I'm just not sure that I want to? I love the closeness, I believe it's good for him, he enjoys it, I suppose also while I'm still bfing he's still my little bubba - when we stop how will be connected? Also I know that the WHO says min 2 years feeding so I'd feel a bit guilty stopping much before that IYKWIM.

On the other hand, I'm not sure how I feel about extended breastfeeding. I am greatly affected by the "sleepy" hormones that are released during feeds, I look forward to being able to have a coffee, headache tablet or even glass of wine without thinking about the next feed, or worrying if I'm eating/drinking well enough to give him good milk. I'm also aware that bfing is probably having an effect on my hormones - libido etc.

I'm currently expressing every night and getting 50ml each time. I'm sort of stockpiling so that even after we wean he'll have some bm. Realistically I know this isn't going to make that much difference to him, it will be gone in a week or two and is maybe only to ease my guilt.

I had also planned to have a bit of time to have my body to "myself" before TTC #2.

Argh it's so hard! Why does he have to be growing up so fast? It doesn't seem so long ago that I was wondering how I was going to be able to feed for 3 weeks let alone 3 months (which was my initial goal). I'm so torn about this decision - I want to do the very best thing by him, but feeling very tired at the moment from the hormones but also the expressing etc. My body has been shared for nearly two years and I'm feeling ready to take it back (but guilty about wanting that! :doh:).

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tish

Hi all :)

DS is 13 months old and on 3 BF a day. I'm hoping to drop that to 2 BF a day at some point, one day... see other post LOL.

DS is intolerant of goats milk and cows milk (including lactose free), he gets a very runny bottom....

He seems to tolerate cheese and yoghurt OK, but I can't just replace his feeds with cheese and yoghurt!

I'd like to try soy milk, but after spending 20 mins at coles today reading all the ingredients have been unable to find a milk that is...
* Calcium rich
* No added sugar
* Suitable for under 2's.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks :)

He has a bowel motion once a day, so I think he is fine with that, he just has alot of gas down below. Does anyone have any advice on bottles or Colic? Have tried Infacol, not much success, we bath him, massage him, sit him for 20 mins after a feed! Not sure what ealse :wall:. Can the bottles help?

Have tried Infacol, not much success, we bath him, massage him, sit him for 20 mins after a feed! Not sure what ealse :wall:. Can the bottles help?

I'm wanting to set myself up to be able to express so that I can attend exercise classes and possibly go into work for a few hours on DH days off. Apart from those reasons DD slept 11hrs last night :dance: and I was bursting - OUCH! So I have some questions.

Which electric pump do you recommend and why?

What else do I need to make this work? (eg. how many bottles? storage? cleaners?)

Any other info I need?? When DD was in neonatal unit I just used to get the bottles from the hospital already sterilised and used their pump and delivered it to the units fridge so it was quite easy then.

Thanks in advance.

I thought BF babies only do a big poo every few days by this stage or am i getting ahead of myself here????

Lactation Cookies Recipe (from the ABA)

Lactation Cookies

* 1 cup butter or marg
* 1 cup sugar
* 1 cup brown sugar
* 4 tablespoons water
* 2 tablespoons flaxseed meal*
* 2 large eggs
* 1 teaspoon vanilla
* 2 cups flour
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 3 cups oats, thick cut if you can get them
* 1 cup or more chocolate chips/sultanas/almonds (whatever takes your fancy)
* 2 tablespoons of brewers yeast* (be generous)

Preheat oven at 180 degrees C. Mix together 2 tablespoons of flaxseed meal and water, set aside for 3-5 minutes. Cream (beat well) margarine and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, mix well. Stir flaxseed mixture and add with vanilla to the margarine mix. Beat until blended. Sift together dry ingredients, except oats and chips. Add to margarine mixture. Stir in oats then chips. Scoop or drop onto baking sheet, preferably lined with parchment. The dough is a little crumbly, so it helps to use a scoop.

Bake 8-12 minutes, depending on size of cookies.

Serves: 6 dozen cookies

Preparation time: 15 minutes

*can be found at any local health food store. Don't substitute brewer's yeast for anything else... that's what makes 'em work!
*Raw dough works 10 fold apparently

I'm going out to a Christmas party tomorrow night (:dance:) and will be gone for a few hours at least.

DS2 usually feeds before bed, then again at about 11.30-1am, then again at about 3-5am.

So I'm going to miss 2 feeds definitely, perhaps 3 if he wakes earlier and DH can't resettle him.

I have already expressed one feed of 125mls - do you think this is enough per feed for a small baby?

Am going to express again today and tomorrow so hopefully will have 3 full feeds here just in case. I'll be in the city so it's not like I can get back home quickly if DH calls.

Expressing - how long for?

Hi

Just wondering how long people express for or if there is a right or wrong amount of time. I am expressing to increase supply and also to provide EBM for top ups that I currently am giving baby. When I started expressing I was advised 10 minutes each side so this is what I had roughly being doing ever since. I am using the Medela Swing now and this excludes the 2 minutes of stimulation.

Should I be doing it for longer?

What I find happens is (most of the time) is that milk starts to come through after the 2minutes of stimulation plus maybe 3 minutes of the slower stronger sucking cycle. However most of the time after about 10 minutes it slows down to literally no output.

Is this what is supposed to happen. I've seen different expressing times mentioned in different threads by different people so was just wondering what other people do.

Cheers

Im not even sure if that what you call it when they stop having bottles!

Bella appears to not like formula much any more! She will only drink about 200 mls of the 240 in the morning, will NOT have a bar of a bottle during the day and now has flat out refused her night bottle tonight.

She is cutting her 8th tooth now, and I am taking her to the Doc tomorrow to make sure her UTI has not come back as she hasnt really eaten that well today either.

She has had several yogurts, a few jars of custard (we were out) and the just ate a bowl of the Rafertys spag boll, she has also had 1 1/2 sippy cups of water today.

So my long winded question is this.... If she no longer wants her bottle of formula - what do I do? She has not started on cows milk yet - she is 11 months - is that to young for cows milk?? She has cows milk on her cerial and in cooking and we have had no issues.. so should I start her with a small amout to drink? Should I mix 1/2 formula and 1/2 cows milk??

Im getting stressed about her bottles - but if she doesnt "want" formula any more there isnt really much I can do!

Any help / advice would be awesome and greatly appreciated!

Laa is 11 months now (OMG!!) and I have a couple of occasions coming up this month where I will be leaving her at home with daddy (will be in the evening, he will need to get her to sleep etc).

She still has a BF before bed and feeds during the night (will probably want a feed before I get home).

She won't drink from bottles and prefers to chew on a sippy cup rather than get anything out.

I don't think I'd be able to express enough to see them through while I am gone.

So, what to do? Don't really want to give her cows milk - was thinking maybe some almond milk or goats milk. But how to give it to her? If I am not here do you think that she would take it from a sippy cup/bottle?

I am off to see pearl jam and I want to enjoy the night, not be worried! I have only ever left her twice, once was back in March and the second time was a few weeks ago (both times were only for about 4 hours).

help!!!

DS2 had some rice cereal yesterday, for the first time.

I cant remember how much to give him though and I am sure he had too much, now Im worried he'll have an upset tummy.

He had no issues in actually knowing what to do, he grabbed the spoon out of my hand several times while I was trying to feed him and ate everything on it then chewed the spoon.

Id say he would have had at least 3-4 teaspoons though, which everything i read tells me is far too much.

So how much should I start off with and how fast can I increase it because he was not a happy camper when I stopped, and i think he would have like to try more.

Right now, I'm feeding Jazz her morning feed and she is on my left, and has her hand down my top and holding onto (groping LOL) my right boob!

Does anyone else's bub do this? It's cute I think (except when she pinches my nipple :doh:), but some people find it a bit confronting and act all funny like its really unusual??? Including two people who have breastfed their kids to 12 months (but not past, I only know one IRL and thats my mum, but thats another story lol). I think jazz started a few months ago, she may or may not have been 12 months :dunno: can't remember exactly.

It's not like I have my other side hanging out, Jazz just likes to hold on and make sure it doesn't fly off I suppose ROFL!!!

So, make me feel normal, because I'm SURE theres other bubs/toddlers out there who have a grope while they're feeding!!!!!!

So ds2 has ebm during the day.
I remember when ds1 was a baby reading something about wide neck bottles not being the best thing, some sort of scientific reasoning about why they were bad for babies, and narrow bottles were better.
One brand was specifically mentioned.

Anyway the reason i ask is that i can only find one manufacturer that sells replacement bottle tops and discs, and its for wide neck bottles but i have bought them, because of this article that i only half remember, but i though BellyBelly posted it..

Anyway the reason i ask is that i can only find one manufacturer that sells replacement bottle tops and discs, and its for wide neck bottles but i have bought them, because of this article that i only half remember, but i though BellyBelly posted it..

My DS is just over 7 months and we have doing solids for nearly 2 months now. So far its just been baby cereal, yoghurt and mashed up vegies/fruit. My nurse suggested it would be good to start trying meat....she recommended chicken first, and since I have never pureed DS's food (just mashed with some lumps left) she suggested cooking up chicken breast and kinda flaking it apart with a fork and mixing thru his vegies. So yesterday I cooked up a heap, flaked it up and froze portions (just like I do with his vegies). Last night I heated up the vege and chicken, mixed them together and started feeding him (DS doesnt feed himself yet). Every mouthful he would gag and cough and after a couple of sponfuls refused his dinner altogether.

So what Im wondering...did I do it wrong? Is that reaction "normal" til he gets used to a different texture in his dinner? What other ways have you guys introduced meat??

Just curious as to when I can offer water, Tristan is 4.5 months old and as it's coming into the hotter months I'd like to keep his fluid up BUT I dont want to be attached to him all day to do it, and I also dont want to affect my supply.

My fear is I'll give him too much water and fill him up on it... kinda silly when I'd only be offering 10mls at a time LOL...

But anyway when did you start offering water?

(I realise that he doesnt NEED water and he will be quite fine on Breastmilk, just want to get some opinions)

Baby Custard Recipe Needed

Does anyone have a recipe for baby custard? DS had some Heinz stuff while we were on holidays and he loved it but I prefer to make my own food for him and cant find a suitable recipe

Looking for one that has minimal sugar, and can you give a 6 month old custard that has egg in it?

And if you want to make chocolate custard, do you just add a bit of cocoa?

Thanks

Hi everyone,

I've been reading up on all the things I'm supposed to feed my DD on at this stage. She's seven months old and taking pureed food easily, not refusing anything. With meat, is mince fine enough, or does it need to be pureed further? I'm seeing that now we're supposed to be giving more mashed food than pureed.

Thanks,

very very lumpy breasts.....

Ok, so I am expressing fulltime & I have a great supply.

Usually I express once overnight however the last few nights I have been too tired / couldn't be stuffed getting up to pump / getting up early to work anyway - so I went 8 hours overnight on Wed, Thurs, Fri night & 8.5 hours last night (not always intentionally either :doh:)

Now I have a lot of big painful lumps on the outside lower part of my right breast & I am worried about blocked ducts & mastitis.
I thought with blocked ducts you just get one at a time?
is it possible for a whole heap to block at once?
How long do they usually take to clear?

I spent an hour last time I pumped massaging it, & with a heat pack & a warm washer, but it doesn't feel any different, only I can feel the lumps better because my breasts aren't as full.

Any other suggestions or ideas on how long it might take to clear?

hi all,

About to have our first bub. It's the first bub in both families fo 25 yrs. My mother never breastfed so she's no help at all... some basic questions i've been wonderng.

1.) when you give bub it's first feed post birth do you offer both boobs? or is it a token gesture to kickstart their little system?

2.) do you then do regular feeds of colostrum in the 3-4 days it takes your milk to come in? and do you offer both sides?

3.) when feeding bub, how do you know he's finished one boob and when to swap to the other??? Or do they usually just take one side and then you offer the other at the next feed?

4.) while in hosp and bub is so young, is it better to feed skin-to-skin all the tiime? or just immediately after the grand arrival?

Okay, i'm sure the midwives at the hospy will be great, but i don't want to seem like a complete ninkumpoop before we get there lol.

any 'insights' into this mysterious world of BF would be greatly appreciated :) thanks girls.

Opps i gave DS spinach?!

This morning i read that you're not supposed to give babies under 12 months spinach.

The book says: "spinach, which contains oxalic acid, may also be a problem until later in the first year"

Over the last week my DS2 who is almost 8 months old has had this amongst other veg. I have small ice cube size blocks of it in the freezer that i was putting together with other things for meals.

Does anyone know oxalic acid and the effect it may have on my DS? He has actually been a bit 'off' lately but as to whether it has anything to do with the spinch i really couldn't tell. His nappies have been a bit looser in the last few days also.

Any info on this would be appreciated TIA :)
