I am a little worried with my blood loss. I started to not have much just a brownie type discharge, then friday i got a lot, like it was trickling out of me??? I rang the ob who said it may be an infection but because i have a cold we cant be sure....she said monitor it for 48 hours and ring Monday.

So yesterday it died down and there wasn't much there but this afternoon it has has become heavy again, and my vagina is becoming quiet painful like throbbing iykwim. Kinda like period pain but 10 times worse but not in my tummy if that makes sense! I also passed a small clot yesterday too.

Does this sound normal? I am going to ring the ob in the morning to ease my mind but just wanted to ask you lovely ladies first!

Some of my friends have been 37 & 5 days; 37 & 5 days; 36 and 1 days; 31 & 2 days.
I'd love more of a clue for planning???? Anyone?

Braxton Hicks or early labour - HELP???

So i will be 35weeks tom with twins. They are both head down with twin 1 very low. Over the past weeks i have noticed more frequent tightnings which i have assumed are BH. I have been very uncomfortable for the past 2-3 weeks esp and have more recently had some very emotional days where i just want it all over! The plan is induction at 36 weeks but my ob made a comment 3 weeks back that maybe i "would go earlier".
I have a habit of reading into things and get very excited only to find everything settles down but today is a little different so was wondering what others think.......

So i noticed this morning i was having a few BH - i'm very keen to go into labour ASAP so i decided i would take the dog for a walk. Later in the morning i was still noticing them but they weren't painful and not unlike other days.
Then at about 2pm i noticed they were more frequent and regular - not painful but i def knew they were happening and i was having alot of mid to lower back pain. So i began cleaning the house!!
My tummy gets very tight (but more up high) and i am having alot of pelvic pressure and groin pain particuly if i'm standing or walking. They were coming about every 10mins for a few hours then died off now have started again. I also have the need to pee more frequently and keep thinking i need to do number 2's but when i'm on the toilet i don't. I also get alot of pressure/tingling in my vagina (sorry tmi!).
No signs of waters breaking and i have had white mucous for weeks and weeks. They are still happening now but no definate pattern?

Anyway i would be interested to know your thoughts!

Thanks Bella

Waters broken

Ok, so my waters broke before labour started last time too, but I went straight to the hospital then & I'm staying at home for the moment.

My non-interventionist Ob is away this week, just my luck, so I'll have to deal with an Ob I've never met if I go to hospital before Monday (unless she's rostered on the weekend).

Can the leak repair itself - it started with a trickle this morning and is more than a trickle now - filling a pad in about an hour.

Last time I started contractions about 14hrs after waters broke and was in active labour about 6hrs after that. Is this likely to be a simmilar situation?

Last time the Ob (different to my non-interventionist one) wanted to induce me 24hrs after my waters broke, is this standard/ necessary?

Should I be doing anything to minimise fluid loss - I seem to gush a bit if I stand up & walk?

Thats all my questions for the time being. Thanks!

Really, this is a bit of a vent, but if anyone has any tips or advice please don't be shy!

Ok, so my best friend is due to have her first baby in 7 weeks time. She has asked me to be her support person which I am so excited about. I have always felt strongly about supporting women in birth and hope to one day become a midwife. When it comes to birthing my own babies, I feel very strongly that I will do this at home with the support of an independent midwife and my husband. My friend has booked into hospital and so far has received good ante-natal care, the hospital she has booked into strongly promotes active labour, immediate skin-to-skin contact, c-section as a last resort etc. My friend is aware that I plan to homebirth my babies and is supportive of this. My friend wants to experience a natural labour, no intervention, to be left alone while she is birthing etc. I do have a few concerns though and I am not sure of what approach I should take to best support her:

-at approx 14 weeks, she posted on facebook saying she had gone shopping for new clothes, coloured her hair and was feeling human again (after 12 weeks of terrible morning sickness. The first response on facebook was from a male friend, 'uhh...dyeing your hair is really dangerous for the baby.' I was so angry, and felt so protective of my friend...I didn't know this 'friend' of hers so didn't want to get into an argument on her fb, so made a comment 'dyeing your hair is the least of your worries after all the heroin you've been doing :P Glad you're starting to feel more like a human!'

-at her first ante-natal class, she was told by the instructor that women should only have one support person, which would usually be the partner, and if they wished, another support person could be in the waiting area incase the partner needed to leave for food/rest some other reason. She expressed that she was disappointed by this and would feel bad having me wait around for what could be hours. I let her know that surely there must be room for negotiation, and that if she wanted me or anyone else there to support her it was her right to stipulate this, especially if they hadn't even given a logical reason. She later told me she was going to include it in her birth plan that I also be in the room with her and her husband during the birth.

- at approx 30 weeks, a check up with her obs indicated that baby was breech...she sms'd me very disappointed, and that if the baby hadn't turned by 34 weeks, she would have to book in for a c-section and that she really didn't want that. When I next spoke to her, I asked whether the obs discussed the option of attempting a natural delivery - she said 'the obs was great, he was confident that the baby would turn on his own, and that he wouldn't do a c-section unless I wanted to, or if the baby was in any danger...that he would prefer me to attempt a natural delivery.' I spent an evening reassuring her that there was still 6 weeks to go and that it was more than likely baby would turn on his own, and that even if he didn't, she didn't have to book into a c-section at any stage and searching online with her for tips and exercised to help baby turn. Just the other day, she sms'd me - baby has turned around on his own and is now in the ideal spot for labour :)

- she posted on her facebook that she was relieved that baby had turned around, it went like this:
*my friend, the mumma*: is very excited that babee has decided to turn the right way around!*
a work colleague (male) of hers*: does that mean not long to go? I am so learning lots of things from you! :)
*a mutual friend:* Sounds like a good idea... smart baby!
*mumma*: haha! Nah [colleague], it just means that I won't necessarily have to be booked in for a cesarean which I'm thrilled about! If I was to go into labour with him up-side-down (legs first), I would need a C-section which = not fun!
*work colleage*: thanks for the preggers lesson....better you than me!
*mumma's sister in law*: are you going to have an epidural?
*mumma*: Nup... I'm going to hardcore it! No pain killers, unless I'm going for over 30 hours and it feels like I'm going to die! Should be a chaotic experience!
*sister in-law*: oh my god. that is hardcore. i'd want to be unconscious and loaded with morphine for my awakening.
*work colleague*: you are a very brave woman.....hopefully the other half knows what he is getting himself in for on the day! :)
*another work colleague (female*): if I can do then so can you... I used to sook when I chewed my nails back too far but I gave birth to Cooper with no meds. Once the body starts there ain't no stopping it. I'm sure that there are plenty of women out there that will disagree with me but I found it such a liberating experience to give birth without meds... don't get me wrong it bloody hurt but it was worth it... but then I did only suffer for four hours... I reckon I would be asking for an epidural if I went 27 hours like Amanda [another work colleague]...I can't wait till your little man is born.... I'm so excited!!!
*Amanda (above mentioned work colleague)*: Go the drugs!!! It's the only time when its legal :)
*mumma*:Hahaha! You guys (SIL, male colleague, Amanda) are hilarious! I agree with you 100% [female colleague] (and I've got my fingers crossed for a 4 hour labour too!!) Plus a little birdie gave me some advice when I asked her opinion a couple of weeks back and had said, "DON'T HAVE AN EPIDURAL!" but now it seems that she's an advocate for 'legal drugs during labour!' (...points to above comment...)
*a friend of mumma's (male) who I dont know*: my mum's had 5 babies (bit of a legend) and says her favourite was when she had an epidural because she could just lie back smacked out and check out the scene. she also recommends the natural births.
she said when she had the gas it didn't help at all, she wasn't concentrating on pushing because all she could think about was getting more gas into her face.

reading these comments as they get posted is just making my blood boil - I have spent 7 months so far trying to build this woman's confidence to achieve the natural birth she wants...she is a teacher, the youngest on staff at her work, and she keeps telling me that the women she works will keep telling her their horror stories, how they wanted natural births for their first child but that all went downhill fast etc etc etc...this woman is my best friend, I love her to death and want to protect her from all this negative $hit that people keep heaping on her...I'm worried that thanks to all the negative and dramatic stories she's being told, she's expecting the worst to happen and that is totally not conducive to her achieving the birth she wants. A few weeks ago she expressed that she was so sick of tests/hospital visits/ante-natal classes etc that she thinks she could just have the baby at home with her husband and me there to support her and all would be fine - I had to bite my lip not to say "YES! YOU COULD!! ITS NOT TOO LATE!! ITS YOUR BEST CHANCE OF HAVING THE NATURAL BIRTH YOU WANT!!'

Arghhh!!@#* the negative stuff is getting to me and I'm worried I'm going to snap at a bad moment, or that perhaps her commitment to a natural birth will wane because of the pressure and drama of these stories which I think would be really sad because she has been saying she wanted it well before she was ever pregnant

reading these comments as they get posted is just making my blood boil - I have spent 7 months so far trying to build this woman's confidence to achieve the natural birth she wants...she is a teacher, the youngest on staff at her work, and she keeps telling me that the women she works will keep telling her their horror stories, how they wanted natural births for their first child but that all went downhill fast etc etc etc...this woman is my best friend, I love her to death and want to protect her from all this negative $hit that people keep heaping on her...I'm worried that thanks to all the negative and dramatic stories she's being told, she's expecting the worst to happen and that is totally not conducive to her achieving the birth she wants.

I was so hoping for a VBAC, but it didn't turn out that way. Below is a brief outline of how my labour went. I am going to the hospital today, hoping to get some closure, so I can stop obsessing about my second CS, and start thinking realistically about trying for a VBA2C when I become pregnant next time, but I'm not sure exactly what I should be asking. Any suggestions??

PS - I know it's last minute, but my hospital appt is at 2pm today, any suggestions would be appreciated before 1pm

Thanks

Tuesday 2/6/09
?	Hospital appointment at 1.15pm to discuss induction in 8-10 days. Have an appointment in 7 days to book in for the induction.
?	Woke at about 9pm feeling very sick
?	Felt first contraction at 10pm.

Wednesday 3/6/09
?	Woke every 35 mins from 3am to 6am with contractions.
?	Got up at 6am. Too excited to sleep any more.
?	DH and DD left for work and school. Had breakfast and went for a walk.
?	Sent mum a text and asked her to come up from the Gold Coast.
?	Some contractions are strong and some are soft, so just keeping track of the really strong ones and they are lasting about 25-30 seconds and are about an hour apart.
?	Contractions have pretty much stopped from 9am.
?	Contractions started again at about 4pm

Thursday 4/6/09
?	Woke every 30 mins with contractions last night, gradually getting stronger and longer each time, lasting upto 90 seconds
?	Waters broke at 5.10am
?	Phoned the hospital and they told me to come in for a check
?	Wasn?t very dilated (they didn?t give me a measurement)
?	Gave me the option of going home or staying at the hospital
?	Chose to go home and was told to come back when contractions were 3 mins apart
?	At 11am contractions were 4 mins apart and lasting anywhere up to 2 mins each
?	The pain was unbearable and I felt I had to go back to the hospital
?	At 3:45pm - 4cm dilated
?	At 7:50pm - 3-4cm dilated
?	As there had been no change in four hours syntocin drip was started at 10:30pm & epidural was given. I figured if I was going to have the syntocin, I may as well do it as painlessly as possible.

Friday 5/6/09
?	12:40am - 6cm dilated
?	2:50am - 8cm dilated
?	4:00am syntocin was turned off as they were worried about Lily?s heartbeat. They *****ed her head three times to try and get an oxygen reading but the machine to test the blood wasn?t working (this is why they had to do it three times!)
?	5:00am - 9cm dilated. Syntocin was re-started and I was given an hour to progress.
?	6:50am ? 9cm dilated still :( Lily?s head was in a transverse position and the moulding of her head suggested an obstructed labour. We then decided we had tried everything possible and opted for a caesarean
?	7:39am ? Our beautiful baby Lily made her entrance into the world with a beautiful cry (exactly one week over due). 56cm, 3.902kg.
?	7:40am ? Placenta delivered
?	8:30am ? Had very sore collar bones (due to the pressure on my diaphragm, I was told), had gone a dreadful shade of red and a terrible case of the shakes. Hearing the anaesthetist discussing it with DH and saying ?This is not normal? was not very comforting!
?	8:50am-ish ? Shakes finally stopped. Phew.

Hi
When your waters break can the flow stop and start?

sorry if this is tmi!
I got up to go the toilet this morning, had a pee. Came back to bed, about 5-10 mins later I get a contraction (I always get them after going the toilet and throughout the day anyway for the last week), it was strong and as I got out of bed, I felt a little leak. Though it must of been a bit of pee!. When I wiped tiny amount of what looked like mucous plug.

Anyway, I was still having very irregular contraction pains (not sure if pre-labour or the usual braxton hicks I get), so I got in the bath for about an hour. Had about 2 pains. I also felt a little trickle in the bath!
Got out, came on the computer, put on a panty liner on. Sat here for about 20 mins, got up walked into bedroom, down 2 steps and then a big leak, enough to soak thin panty liner. Fluid clear and water like. Didnt smell of urine.

Now there is no fluid, can the flow just stop like this? would it keep coming if it was the amniotic fluid? or does it sound like I could just have weak pelvic floors!?

(I havent had a contraction/braxton hicks for about half an hour)
Thanks!

I am 38 weeks and 2 days pregnant. I am curious to know what people think of using castor oil as a natural method to commence labour hopefully and is there a specific way to take castor oil. I am walking, taking Blackmores raspberry leaf extract tablets, can't have sex as I am a single mother (hehehe) etc.

Hi

I'm now 11 days overdue which is quite frustrating but at least I know that the big day is now only a few days away at most. I had fetal monitoring earlier this week and they said everything was great. I'm going back to the hospital today for more monitoring plus an internal (have not had any internals to date) and they said depending on what my cervix is doing they might give me cervidil in preparation for a full induction on Saturday.

Has anyone else had cervidil? What should I expect? Is it likely to trigger labour or is it more likely to just get things ready for Saturday? If it triggers labour is this a better method of induction than other methods - will I be less likely to need other forms of intervention? I'm a little scared, anxious and excited about all of this!

I guess I will ask all of this at the hospital today but just thought some of you lovely ladies might have some advice or experiences to share.

Thanks,
Fi

This is my first pregnancy and I wish to have natural birth but I'm not sure how to prepare myself. I heard of HypnoBirthing and I'd like to learn about these. Anyone heard of it and practicing it? Is it useful?

Questions:
1. I am living in Sydney North Shore. May you recommend any HypnoBirthing classes that is good and not that expensive? I found this: Welcome to EnergyFlow HypnoBirthing - Hypnosis for Birth on the North Shore of Sydney (http://www.energyflow.com.au). It will cost more than $400. It is considering costly for me, unless it's really helping a lot so that I can justify the cost. Recommendations and any opinions will be helpful.

2. If attending a cost is too much expensive, do you think I can pick up the techniques just by reading from books/cds/dvds? What books/cds/dvds should I buy? I'm totally new to this. I googled around, but not too sure what are needed.

Thanks for your help!

May seem like a weird question because there are a few threads asking the same thing - but I'll be going to a birth centre (which I'm not sure what to take) and if I end up being transferred, then I'll be having a c-section at the public hospital (and then transferred to private hossy afterwards)

So I've never been told what you need for a birth centre birth - all I know is what Selangor would let you have for a birth there - and my midwives are away at the moment and I won't be seeing them until sometime later this week. DH wants me to get things organised and pack the bags now - just in case

Not to mention that I also have to pack a bag for the kids just in case they need to go somewhere else (dunno where! I'm sure someone would pick them up from the side of the road.. haha) and also some stuff for the newborn.

I need lists!

Coccyx displacement in labour?

Hello ladies I was just wondering if its true that if you have already broken your coccyx bone that it will happen again in labour?
I have broken my coccyx when i was 17 and dislocated it again when i was 22 so do I have any luck of keeping it in place? Is there anything I can do to prevent it misplacing or getting hurt.
Thanks so much.

Will these problems complicate my labour?

So I am hoping for a totally natural birth this time around...but I have had major issues with muscles in my groin and my tummy in the past few weeks. My OB said the pain will go once baby is born.

Now i am worried as the pain in my tummy, just above and to my left of my belly button is excruciating...will it get worse when having contractions?
The pain in my groin is pretty bad most days it buckles me over and I did collapse the other day due to a nerve in my leg ...will this affect me birthing on all fours i don't want my legs to give way?

I know i will probably just have to see when it happens but did anyone experience anything like this?

hospital visitors

so far I'm thinking I want as little visitors as possible to the hospital. I'm planning on breast feeding and as I will be learning I don't want to get stressed, and worry about feeding with visitors there. Also I would like it to be a bonding time for me, the baby and DH. I also don't want the baby being passed around like a doll. But I may change my mind once there! I'm just unsure how I will feel as its my first baby (and first hospital stay)

When I was born, my mum liked having visitors to the hospital. She enjoyed having them.

I'm sort of thinking about saying no visitors for the first day or two (my hospital likes first time mums to stay in for upto 5 days), is it bad to have visitors come when you have the baby blues?. I'm thinking it might be best to have visitors to the hospital rather than have them come to the house when we get home. (I live in a small town and people are likely just to come over without calling first)

what are your views/opinions? how did you go? did you like having visitors to the hospital? or not? did you get to many visitors? or would you have liked more? is it best to have visitors say, the 2nd day, as opposed to the 4th when baby blues is likely.... or does it really not matter!?

Thanks :)
