Make sure you check it can lay fully down and sit up in a comfortable but restrained position.

We bought a fancy $700 three wheeler only to discover there was no strap between the legs so once my son could sit up (5months old) he would slide down into the zipped up section...
Lucky the extra add on was there to catch him. Now we cant use it. What a waste of cash

My youngest child is almost out of his pram... so this is totally wishful thinking... but in another life I would have loved to have had a SilverCross pram. Pictured HERE (http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=125301&id=583407489&saved#/photo.php?pid=2799612&id=583407489) (FaceBook photo)

There is a mum at my DS's school who has a vintage one... it is beautiful... sadly people just assume you're being hoity toity by loving these prams... to me they are more like loving vintage cars... a ride down memory lane when people generally walked to where they needed to go... prams didn't need to be compromised to fit in with your car etc.

Hushamok hammocks - feedback please!

Our DD has been diagnosed with silent reflux and the poor little thing really struggles with day sleeps unless she is in the sling. A few people have recommended getting a hammock for her but I hadn't bothered as she was only diagnosed 2 weeks ago and I thought babies outgrew hammocks around 3 months so didn't see the point. I've since found out that's not the case and they can stay in them up until 6 months! We are now seriously considering getting a Hushamok Hammock. Can anyone give me some feedback on these hammocks?

TIA

anyone know how Gymboree clothes are sized?

Does anyone know about the kind of cut that Gymboree clothes use for their baby stuff? I've seen the brand (it's a US brand) highly recommended, and it occurs to me that buying winter stuff at the end of the US winter, when it's on special, would make it worth the postage to Aus. But I don't know what the cut of the clothes is like, and I find it hard to tell that kind of thing from the photos.

DD is a chubby bub at present (6 months old). Really very chubby (and very lovely with it, I must say). I find that some brands of clothes I've bought have been no good at all because they seem to be designed for kids who are much skinnier at this age (some stuff from Target, for example - even stuff a whole size up just didn't fit comfortably around her waist, as the elastic in the pants was too tight). I find, for example, that the Pumpkin Patch stuff fits her beautifully - it seems to be cut for a baby that is basically the same shape that she is, so it's really comfy.

Does anyone have any Gymboree clothes for their littlies? Do you like them? What size and shape are your kids and how well do they fit?

Thanks!

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me where I can find a baby album that is not just 'photo pockets' and that is it? I am after an album that has things written in it and you add photos and write things (like the old fashioned ones?) All I can seem to find are albums with nice covers but are blank inside. I am after something that for example has a fmaily tree you fill in and a spot where you put 1st smile photo etc etc. I hope this makes sense. I am having so much trouble finding one. Thanks

port-a-cot - get one or not?

Hi girls,

My brother wants to buy something for us/baby and won't take no (politely said) for an answer. I've explained given the bub is only just over a month away, we have bought everything we need for now... and never having had a child, are not sure what we might need once the bub arrives until, well, you get the drift.

Anyhoo, one thing we havne't got and i thought might be handy is a port-a-cot. Both sets of families are 2 plane trips away from us and we really like camping.

But are the cots a waste of money? How often do you use your portacot and when?

otherwise any other suggestions on items for bub that you just love, but wouldn't have necessarily have bought yourself as part of the basic-nursery/baby stuff package.

(we have a hug-a-bub, pram, change table, mobile, electric breast pump, high chair, car seats, play rugs etc etc)

Despite the heat my little bubba wont sleep without being wrapped.. and regular size muslin wraps are to small now that he is 4 months. I cant believe how expensive muslin wraps are, especially the extra large ones!

I finally found some cheaper ones at Sams Warehouse of all places. They currently have baby wonder muslins wraps for $4.99 each!

I would love to make my own but we are moving so everything is packed away in boxes!

Just thought I would let you guys know : )

I have not used one of these before. Are they good?
I want a spring mattress and was thinking of putting a protector on it, but maybe I could get the water proof type insted? I am concerned about the mattress breathing.

What are the pros and cons of water proof mattress when compared to a mattress with separate protector?

And would you use a 2nd hand one or do you think thats a bit yuck? I wouldnt have a problem with a 2nd matress that had been looked after with a removable cover, so not sure if its any different.

I feel so dumb but - Mattress Protector and Underlay

Ahhhh I feel like a complete nitwit asking this question:

I have decided to re wash all the baby linen today just to freshen it up a bit as its been a few weeks since it was first washed.
With that said I will need to redress the cot.

I have never used either of the following items myself so I have no idea whether you need to use both OR how to set them up.
My cot mattress has a waterproof side so I will be using that but how does the rest of the stuff go ?

Woolen underlay then mattress protector - to protect the underlay from wees and poos and chucks

Or

Mattress protector then Underlay?

Or

One or the other

Then what the fitted sheet and top sheet? Do you fold the top sheet in half so it only comes a certain portion up the bed? I have no idea

Over my "collecting time" I have gone a bit OTT as I have a snuggle bed and an Amby Hammock as well  and I am washing all that stuff as well - at least my bases will be covered

Thanks all

Hi everyone

DH and I have started looking at prams... I know very early but we want to layby one soon. I have been to look at both the beema and the phil and teds. I know everyone raves about phil and teds but I really don't like the fact to make it useful you have to buy a million add ons, which will really push the price up. However the Beema seems to have all the features the Phil and teds have without the price tag but it has no option for a toddler seat if and when we have our second bubs.

Also we would really love a new one but have seen some absolute bargains on ebay for beemas especially so considering going second hand. Has anyone else gone second hand?

What do you think?

Not sure about them, but as we are looking for a cot right now and I see they have a special on, so wondering if I should consider one from there or avoid them!
I want something that drops down with only one hand too - do the Bruin ones?

When I checked with online manual, I believe I need a extra belt?

Who should I go for installation (reasonable price) and checking the safety of it?

Sorry, I'm new to this at all.

its about 35 degrees in this house today, (hotter than outside!). baby is due in a few days so I think its a good idea to buy a portable aircon unit. We will use it in our room first (as baby sleeping in basinet in there) then we will use in babys room.

They seem quite expensive, and we don't want to go buying one that is useless. any reccomendations? where to buy and the price? any to avoid, that you have found not good enough???

we are looking for one that is quiet to use

thanks :D

New rules for using child restraints and booster seats -

New rules for using child restraints and booster seats -

VICTORIA - November 9th 2009
NEW SOUTH WALES - March 1st 2010
QUEENSLAND - March 11th 2010

From 9 November 2009 there will be some changes to Victoria?s road safety rules. These changes include new rules for the use of child restraints and booster seats in vehicles and will help parents and carers ensure their children are in the safest child restraint or booster seat for their age.

The new rules for using child restraints and booster seats
Starting 9 November 2009, children under seven years of age must wear a child restraint or booster seat when travelling in a car for improved safety.

The type of restraint will depend on the age of the child as follows:

*?Children aged under six months* must wear an approved, properly fastened and adjusted, rear facing child restraint
*?Children aged between six months and under four years* must wear an approved, properly fastened and adjusted, rear facing child restraint OR a forward facing child restraint with an in-built harness
*?Children aged between four years and under seven* must wear an approved, properly fastened and adjusted, forward facing child restraint with an in-built harness OR an approved booster seat which is properly positioned and fastened.

There are also new laws for where children can sit in vehicles.
?If a car has two or more rows of seats, then children under four years must not travel in the front seat
?If all seats, other than the front seats, are being used by children under seven years, children aged between four and six years (inclusive) may travel in the front seat, provided they use an approved restraint or booster seat.

*VicRoads also recommends*
That you have restraints fitted by an approved child restraint fitter.

*The road safety reasons *

?On average, nearly 300 children under the age of seven are injured or killed as passengers in vehicles on Victorian roads each year
?Parents are generally moving their children into adult seatbelts from about the age of five and a half years - research suggests this is simply too early
?Children up to seven years are at least four times more likely to sustain a head injury in a crash when sitting in an adult seatbelt only
?Other research shows seating children aged four to seven years old in an appropriate booster seat reduces their risk of injury in a crash by almost 60 per cent, compared to if they were sitting in an adult seatbelt without a booster seat.

*What you have to do*
To comply with the new child restraint rules you:

?have to know which is the correct child restraint(s) to use
?have to ensure that each child passenger is wearing a properly fitted and fastened child restraint or booster seat suitable for their age every time they travel in a vehicle.

*Exemptions*
Taxis will continue to be exempt from the child restraint requirements. However, parents are encouraged to use their own restraints in taxis where possible. When there is no suitable child restraint available a seatbelt must be worn.

*Frequently asked questions*

1.What can I do if my child is too big for the restraint for their age?
The new laws aim to cater for the majority of children, however there is a provision to allow a child who is too tall or heavy for the recommended restraint to use the restraint in the next age category.

2.What should I look for when purchasing a child restraint?
All child restraints sold in Australia must meet the Australian Standard AS/NZS 1754. However, independent testing has shown that some restraints provide more protection and are easier to use than others. When purchasing a restraint consider the following:

?its suitability for the child in relation to their age, weight and height
?the size of the seat space and vehicle (where possible take your car with you to test that the restraint/booster fits).

Child restraints

*1. What can I do if my child is too big for a booster seat? *
While the new laws aim to cater for the majority of children, a provision will be included to ensure a child is not required to use a restraint unsuitable for their height and weight. A child, who is too heavy for the restraint recommended for their age, should use a restraint for the next age category (see table below). For example, if a child is too big for a booster (greater than 26kg), a seatbelt can be worn or an approved child safety harness can be used in conjunction with a lap belt or lap/sash seatbelt. In addition there are products such as SafeFit which can help achieve good seatbelt fit. Rear facing child restraint (inbuilt harness) Products are available for children up to 9kg or 12kg.

Approved child restraint (inbuilt harness) Suitable for children up to a maximum weight of 18kg.

Approved booster seat(additional child safety harness optional) Suitable for children up to a maximum weight of 26kg

*2. If my child is in a booster seat do they also need to be in a child safety harness? *
Booster seats do not come with a child safety harness. Booster seats are designed to be used with a lap/sash seatbelt. However, if your child is using a seating position fitted with a lap-only belt then they must use a child safety harness.

*3. What's the difference between inbuilt harness and a child safety harness? *
An inbuilt harness is made at the time of manufacture as part of the child restraint. It is suitable for children up to 18kg. There are no inbuilt harnesses available for children over 18kg. A child safety harness is purchased separately. It is suitable for children that are between 18kg up to 32kg.
*
4. Does the booster seat have to be anchored? *
If the booster seat comes with a tether strap it must be anchored. However, there are some booster seats that meet the Australian Standard (AS/NZS 1754) that do not need to be anchored in a vehicle.

*5. Is it possible to fit three child restraints across the back seat of my car? *
There is considerable variation in the types of child restraints and booster seats available. It will depend on the type chosen, as well as the combination of restraints required, and the make and model of your car. Don't forget - you will also need to find out whether there are enough anchorage points in your vehicle with which to fit the restraints. If you are unsure where the anchorage points are located in your vehicle, refer to the vehicle owner's manual under the section of "Child Restraints" or "Child Restraint Anchorage Systems".

*6. If I can't fit my three children in three restraints in the back, is it OK if one sits in the front? *
Yes. If there are two child restraints or booster seats in the rear and there is not enough space to put a third restraint or booster in the rear seat then a passenger aged four to less than seven years can be in a booster seat in the front seat.

?Children aged under six months must wear an approved, properly fastened and adjusted, rear facing child restraint
?Children aged between six months and under four years must wear an approved, properly fastened and adjusted, rear facing child restraint OR a forward facing child restraint with an in-built harness
?Children aged between four years and under seven must wear an approved, properly fastened and adjusted, forward facing child restraint with an in-built harness OR an approved booster seat which is properly positioned and fastened.

VicRoads also recommends
That you have restraints fitted by an approved child restraint fitter.

The road safety reasons

What you have to do
To comply with the new child restraint rules you:

?have to know which is the correct child restraint(s) to use
?have to ensure that each child passenger is wearing a properly fitted and fastened child restraint or booster seat suitable for their age every time they travel in a vehicle.

Exemptions
Taxis will continue to be exempt from the child restraint requirements. However, parents are encouraged to use their own restraints in taxis where possible. When there is no suitable child restraint available a seatbelt must be worn.

Frequently asked questions

1. What can I do if my child is too big for a booster seat?

2. If my child is in a booster seat do they also need to be in a child safety harness?
Booster seats do not come with a child safety harness. Booster seats are designed to be used with a lap/sash seatbelt. However, if your child is using a seating position fitted with a lap-only belt then they must use a child safety harness.

3. What's the difference between inbuilt harness and a child safety harness?
An inbuilt harness is made at the time of manufacture as part of the child restraint. It is suitable for children up to 18kg. There are no inbuilt harnesses available for children over 18kg. A child safety harness is purchased separately. It is suitable for children that are between 18kg up to 32kg.

4. Does the booster seat have to be anchored?
If the booster seat comes with a tether strap it must be anchored. However, there are some booster seats that meet the Australian Standard (AS/NZS 1754) that do not need to be anchored in a vehicle.

5. Is it possible to fit three child restraints across the back seat of my car?
There is considerable variation in the types of child restraints and booster seats available. It will depend on the type chosen, as well as the combination of restraints required, and the make and model of your car. Don't forget - you will also need to find out whether there are enough anchorage points in your vehicle with which to fit the restraints. If you are unsure where the anchorage points are located in your vehicle, refer to the vehicle owner's manual under the section of "Child Restraints" or "Child Restraint Anchorage Systems".

6. If I can't fit my three children in three restraints in the back, is it OK if one sits in the front?
Yes. If there are two child restraints or booster seats in the rear and there is not enough space to put a third restraint or booster in the rear seat then a passenger aged four to less than seven years can be in a booster seat in the front seat. You will need to use a booster seat that does not need to be anchored.

7. Can I still use the additional seat (****ie seat) that I have in the back of my station wagon?
****ie seats will be permitted for use for children aged four and less than seven years provided the seat is suitable for children's height and weight and a lap sash seatbelt or seatbelt with a child safety harness is used.

Are there any slimline child seats available. At the moment, we have a SnS Maxi Rider & SnS Meridian. Both child seats are big and bulky. We have a Rav4, so will need downsize the child seats to get 3 in. So I'm looking at what options I have.
Also, with the new child seat regulations that are coming in to effect in 2010 (for Qld), what are the new ones for 4 year olds? Nina will be 4 when #3 arrives.
