Would you take advice from a failed VBACer?

I've been thinking about it & wondered if anyone would take advice on VBACs from someone who's attempt failed? By that I mean someone that actually went into labour but had a caesarean anyway, not someone that planned a VBAC but had to have a caesarean due to medical issues before labour (breech, placenta previa etc).

I have to wonder now where I fit in the birth world. How can I give advice to people about VBACs when my attempt failed? How can I talk about the benefits when I have no clue in the real world, only in theory? A friend of mine told me the other day that is she was to have a third (1st was VB, 2nd was C/S) she was unsure about how to birth. Two years ago prior to my second caesarean I would have said go for a VBAC without a seconds thought. Now I feel like I'm jaded, like what's the point in trying because there is always the chance that your going to end up like me & having a 2nd casearean anyway. Of course I didn't say that, it's up to her to decide but I feel like I can't give her advice because obviously what I did didn't work.

I was chatting to my 70 odd year old grandmother the other day, we were talking about Jacobs birth, I mentioned how I was (and still do feel) feeling about the ceasarean, and how I thought it may be difficult for me to get to have a VBAC next time around.
She laughed and said " Bull ****! My second child was a Csection (my uncle) and I had 4 more vaginally after that! theres no reason you cant!" she even has a classical vertical incision! I mean yeah, that was hmmm, 50 years ago, but still....:o
Makes me think my scar definately is strong, just thought I would put that out there...:D

Hi everyone,

I was planning to try for a VBA2C in April next year. So far everything was going well I have a great midwife and supportive OB (Lionel vaginal) and was feeling great about it until I recieved my hospital records today!!
My midwife wanted to see how far my first labour went so I got the hospital to send the info to me.

Anyway it finaly arrived today and I am really worried and now feel sick about my VBA2C. It appears my last ceasarean although was a typical low transverse incision (horizontal) she also cut 3cm down towards my pubic bone on the left side so I have an offset T shape :shakehead:. Does anyone know if this makes my VBA2C more risky????????

I have tried looking it up but can only find info on inverted T incicion or a high T incision, I cant find anything about a low transverse incision that extends down.
I cant get hold of my midwife til tomorrow and I dont see my OB till end of december.
Does anyone know or had this and still got the OK for a VBAC or VBA2C?

I know its just the pregnancy hormones here but I feel like I am going to be ripped off again and it is almost bringing me to tears because I just feel like its going to be bad news.

Thank you for reading this and I hope someone has some info for me.

I'm not a big Duggar fan normally, but after just reading a blog I subscribe to (Birth Babies & Everything in Between) I am thoroughly impressed...

---Quote---
Now, if you are unaware of who Michelle Duggar is I will give you the "run down" on her birth history. Michelle is currently pregnant with her 19th child. Her previous 18 children have included 3 cesareans, 16 vaginal births, and 13 VBAC's. On the Duggar's website, they praise ICAN for being helpful on gaining knowledge of VBAC.

Michelle's First Cesarean section was with her second pregnancy, which was twins Jana and John David. She went on to have many VBAC's during that time, then had a second cesarean section with baby number 15, Jackson, and lastly with baby # 18 Jordyn for a transverse position when Michelle went into labor.

Now, that is a whole lot of VBAC's not to mention many of them were before the "2 year" preferable waiting period in between pregnancies. While all women may not be Michelle Duggar, or even heal the way she does, if she does not show the safety of VBAC, I am not sure what ever will.
---End Quote---
13 VBACs and two of them VBA2Cs :o How amazing is that? I wonder if she had to fight for them all. I also wonder if number 19 will be a VBA3C.

Hi all,
I've just realised that whenever I tell people that I plan on VBAC-ing, I always put emphasis on *trying*... as in "I am going to *try* for a VBAC"

Do you think this kind of thinking is counterproductive? Would it be more beneficial to be certain that I am going to succeed, or is better to have some kind of realistic understanding that I am just "trying" and there is a possibility it won't happen.

Just a random question :D

De-breif of traumatic birth at Hospital today - what should I ask?

I was so hoping for a VBAC, but it didn't turn out that way. Below is a brief outline of how my labour went. I am going to the hospital today, hoping to get some closure, so I can stop obsessing about my second CS, and start thinking realistically about trying for a VBA2C when I become pregnant next time, but I'm not sure exactly what I should be asking. Any suggestions??

PS - I know it's last minute, but my hospital appt is at 2pm today, any suggestions would be appreciated before 1pm

Thanks

Tuesday 2/6/09
?	Hospital appointment at 1.15pm to discuss induction in 8-10 days. Have an appointment in 7 days to book in for the induction.
?	Woke at about 9pm feeling very sick
?	Felt first contraction at 10pm.

Wednesday 3/6/09
?	Woke every 35 mins from 3am to 6am with contractions.
?	Got up at 6am. Too excited to sleep any more.
?	DH and DD left for work and school. Had breakfast and went for a walk.
?	Sent mum a text and asked her to come up from the Gold Coast.
?	Some contractions are strong and some are soft, so just keeping track of the really strong ones and they are lasting about 25-30 seconds and are about an hour apart.
?	Contractions have pretty much stopped from 9am.
?	Contractions started again at about 4pm

Thursday 4/6/09
?	Woke every 30 mins with contractions last night, gradually getting stronger and longer each time, lasting upto 90 seconds
?	Waters broke at 5.10am
?	Phoned the hospital and they told me to come in for a check
?	Wasn?t very dilated (they didn?t give me a measurement)
?	Gave me the option of going home or staying at the hospital
?	Chose to go home and was told to come back when contractions were 3 mins apart
?	At 11am contractions were 4 mins apart and lasting anywhere up to 2 mins each
?	The pain was unbearable and I felt I had to go back to the hospital
?	At 3:45pm - 4cm dilated
?	At 7:50pm - 3-4cm dilated
?	As there had been no change in four hours syntocin drip was started at 10:30pm & epidural was given. I figured if I was going to have the syntocin, I may as well do it as painlessly as possible.

Friday 5/6/09
?	12:40am - 6cm dilated
?	2:50am - 8cm dilated
?	4:00am syntocin was turned off as they were worried about Lily?s heartbeat. They *****ed her head three times to try and get an oxygen reading but the machine to test the blood wasn?t working (this is why they had to do it three times!)
?	5:00am - 9cm dilated. Syntocin was re-started and I was given an hour to progress.
?	6:50am ? 9cm dilated still :( Lily?s head was in a transverse position and the moulding of her head suggested an obstructed labour. We then decided we had tried everything possible and opted for a caesarean
?	7:39am ? Our beautiful baby Lily made her entrance into the world with a beautiful cry (exactly one week over due). 56cm, 3.902kg.
?	7:40am ? Placenta delivered
?	8:30am ? Had very sore collar bones (due to the pressure on my diaphragm, I was told), had gone a dreadful shade of red and a terrible case of the shakes. Hearing the anaesthetist discussing it with DH and saying ?This is not normal? was not very comforting!
?	8:50am-ish ? Shakes finally stopped. Phew.

Ok, so my due date is a while off yet, I'm 17 weeks today. But I am trying to understand all my options and the facts as early as possible.
I had an appointment two weeks ago, and most of what the midwife told me about VBAC labours at the hospital was quite encouraging. I feel like most of it, I will be able to negotiate my way around to have a labour that is as close to natural as possible. The only thing that's still bothering me a bit is that they will schedule a repeat cesarean for when I am between 41 and 42 weeks. I don't know enough about this to know what negotiations I can make. Is there any way around this? Is it at all safe to induce for a VBAC? Can I push to go a bit later and how can I do this?

Any info you can offer around this would be GREAT!!

I'm heading for an appointment at the hospital tomorrow. It's my second, but at my first appointment I didn't realise that I would have so many restrictions on me attempting a VBAC.
I want to be armed with a list of questions... here is what I have so far:

What is their VBAC success rate?
How long over due will I be allowed to go, and if I reach this stage will they want to induce me or do another cesarean?
How long am I "allowed" to be in labour for?
What pain relief will they "allow" me during labour?

I know they can't force me to conform to their policies and procedures, but I want to know what they are so I know what I will be fighting against.

Any suggestions for other questions to ask?

Hi everyone :)

I have a question for all those that have had a VBAC or attempting one... Have your family been on board?

I have two children, both c/s babies, the second being a failed VBAC attempt. During the pregnancy my family were kind of supportive, but have since said that they would be unhappy if I tried for a VBAC a second time. My husband is fine with it, just wants me to do what I feel comfortable & will stand by me whichever way I choose to go.

If your family (and friends) were against it how did you get around it? Is it worth just not telling them & doing it without mentioning exact due dates etc? How can you get around it if they start asking when the c/s date is? Should I just stand up for myself & say this is what I am doing?

Confused

I have a 9 month old son and am due to have my second child early April 2010. My son was born via emergency c-section at the Mater Private after I was induced after 12 hours (waters broke at home. He didn't like the artificial hormone and his heart rate kept dropping).

I would like to attempt a VBAC at the Mater Private at South Brisbane and am just wondering if there is anyone who has had a VBAC at that hospital? I would really like to hear about your experiences. I also want to find out how many of the midwives there have actually attended a VBAC but am not sure if I will have any luck finding this out. My obstetrician is totally open to VBAC and has provided the standard fact sheet which is a positive start. Can anyone help?
