Just wondering if anyone has completed the Birthskills course in SA- it is run by Shari Reed I think. I am consdiering it but wanted to know if anyone else could provide any feedback about the course??

Thanks.

Hi SJM,

Sorry I haven't done it but wanted to say that I would be really interested too in anyone's experiences.

I dont think there is much on offer in SA regarding antenatal classes is there? I am booked at WCH and am due to do the antenatal class this weekend. So will see how that goes.

Thanks Rachel,

We have decided to go ahead and do the course- the person who runs it is a midwife so hopefully has lots of experience to share... I am hoping to get some practical advice on active labour, positions, breathing etc etc. Hopefully it is worthwhile!!

Cheers,
SJM

Hi all,

Just letting you know that we did the SA Birthskills course on the weekend and would certainly recommend it to others- it gave a really good overview of the actual process of labour including the role that hormones play and how some interventions can affect hormone levels and birth. I found this very useful!! It also covered relaxation techniques and visulisation etc etc and lots of other things!

I found it a very independant view of managing labour rather than just the view of the hospital you are birthing at so certainly a worthwhile class if you can fit it in.

I certainly feel a lot more calm and positive about labour and have more confidence in the bodies natural ability to birth a baby.

Good luck.

SJM

That sounds great SJM. Glad you found it useful.

I am about to do the antenatal class at WCH as well as the water birth class there. And I am using the Hypno-birthing CDs for relaxation and visualization. Will see how we go!

Good luck!

SJM is that course you did based on the "Juju Sundin's Birth Skills with Sarah Murdoch" book and birthing classes?

I have just been lent a copy of this book and I really like it. I would be interested to know if it is the same system and if so how you found out about it and any contact details for the course you did.

Thanks,

Rachel

Hi there,

The course we did was called Birthskills but was not the same as the Juju Sundin book. If you google Birthskills you should get a hit for the Shari Read version. There is one midwife in SA that does the courses- she works PT at WCH I think- Donna is her name.

I have got the Juju book too and combined with the Shari Read course I think it gives you a pretty good mix of things to try to get through labour.

Good luck.
