| | Pre-conception vitamins
Hi All,
I have read through many of your posts and it seems we are all out to do 'what is best' for our not-yet-conceived babies. I have had lengthy discussions with several colleagues (doctors) and pharmacists about pre-pregnancy vitamins. I feel i might as well have shares in Elevit for i have been taking it for like 12 months and it is sooooo expensive. Most GP's recommend it, but as an example of pre-conception multivitamins not specifically Elevit ie they also recommend Panadol but really mean any form of paracetamol.
In fact, although Elevit has a higher amount of folic acid than some others, all pre-conception vitamins contain the required amount for conception. Blackmores has the advantage of having fish oil/omega-3 i think, but having said that, i also read that this isnt really that important until 22 weeks of conception when brain development is at its peak. My pharmacist actually recommended Fabfol, as it has the major components like iron, folic acid and zinc/magnesium but the iron is chelated meaning less chance of constipation. It is also cheaper. It doesnt contain calcium though if you dont have a good intake of dairy.
Apart from that i think healthy eating and exercise is essential regardless of ttc or not, and of course cutting DOWN caffeine and alcohol is only going to help. I dont think you need to completely abandon all pleasantries though... the occasional glass of wine can help you unwind! Also, no hot baths, spas, tight underwear for ladies or men ttc. Dh is also starting a men's multivitamin with zinc, just cos i hear it helps repair sperm (it's normal to want to blame his little fella's for our failure to conceive so far isn't it? hehe) and keep it healthy.
Is there anything i should be doing that i am not?
