hi tan

- i went through this a few times over the last year with my
DS. i used to hold him for his day sleeps until he was 10 weeks old and then at 5 months had to go back to cuddling to sleep again. he's pretty good now - generally goes to sleep without being cuddled.
what worked for me was introducing a pre-bed routine (which i still stick to) where the very last thing was a cuddle - i'd also wait until he was drowsy before putting him down. i think the routine helps him understand what's next, providing some predictability.
so here's what i did:
- pre-bed routine (books, nappy change, grobag, cuddle).
- cuddle until drowsy
- place in cot
- leave room.
if he cried (not just the grizzly noise) i'd go in there and give another cuddle and repeat the process. it took a few days for
DS to 'get it' though and it was hard going - i needed a lot of support along the way. once bub was falling asleep by himself this dramatically affected his night sleeps (for the better).
also if you haven't heard already, the book "the no cry sleep solution" by elizabeth pantley provides some really practical suggestions for helping bubs fall asleep without the breast/cuddle/dummy.
hang in there
