| | Hand, Foot and Mouth Spots
Well no thanks to a lovely friend and her bub for sharing Hand, Foot and mouth with my bubba girl, we had to take her to hospital last night! with very high temp, not sleeping, drinking or eating, covered from head to toe in spots, v&d, and is just plain miserable!
Has anyone else's bubs been unfortunate to experience this? and is there anything i can do to help her discomfort?
The doctor only suggested panadol but not even that is helping, she is really miserable, and its breaking my heart to see her like this!
Also how long did it last for?
Once again im fuming at a inconsiderate, selfish mother to not warn me of her child's condition!

Hi Hj thats awful your poor little DD, i see Hand foot and mouth a bit as i work in childcare, but never had a child with v and d with it, are the spots fluidy like blisters??? Parents have told me that giving the child icy poles or cool things to eat such as yoghurt, custard etc, helps with the pain from having the blisters as well as keeping her hydrated. We have always been told not to pop the blisters just to let them dry naturally and that while she has the blisters she is still contagious. It spreads really easily especially through dribble and faeces and faeces can be iinfectious for a few weeks after the blisters are gone so take care that you and Dh don't catch it too!Other than that i don't have much more info i'm sorry just that they usually refuse food/drink because of the pain with the blisters in the mouth.
Your friend really should have told you her child was sick because it is sooooo contagious grrr to her.
Hope your Dd feels better soon xxx
PS i forgot to mention that once the temp goes she shouldn't be as miserable but the blisters can hang around for up to a week

tay has had this numerous times. always have v &D best solution we found was lots of baths, 3 a day in a nice luke warm bath and bubbles, not to many clothes, no socks as they irritated her blister son her feet. ice blocks as she gets the blisters all through her mouth and we minimise dairy while she is vomiting.
panadol and nurofen were our saviours.
otherwise im sorry its hard i know but it will get better
tays lasts anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks depends how bad she has it temp usually goes after 48-72 hours, then she is just itchy and sore

Kimmy - yep some of the spots are fluidy! i have put some fruit puree in the fridge for miss B which she seems to be enjoying - is pretty much the only thing that she will eat! you had heaps of info thanks for that! Hmmm not going to be good if DH or i get it - but im assuming if we were to get it we would have by now????
Her temp has gone down well today it only peaked at 37.6 which is nothing compared to what it was and she is still miserable - cries and cries and cries and hasnt slept and isnt sleeping now! Im home alone tonight while DH is on shift and im so tired!
I hate having a sick bub! its hard on both of us!
kawazuki - 2wks!!!!!!!! B's birthday is comming up soon! my poor little girl is going to miss out on her 1st bday party????!!! oh now im really upset!
I went to the chemist and got some pinetarsol to put in her bath tonight and i have also covered her in calamine lotion! will definatly try more baths for her tomorrow - she loves her baths so that just might soothe her a bit during the day and hopefull make her feel a little more comfortable and sleepy - we haven't had much sleep last night and tonight is looking like its going to be a painful one also!

There is a product you can get that you wipe quickly over mouth ulcers and it hardens straight away - Kenalog or something similar maybe. A chemist would know.
I haven't used it on DD, but SIL tried it on her DD when she had HFM a little while ago. Not sure of any age restrictions.

well its been a week now and Miss B is improving - she drunk 100mls of her bottle for the 1st time last night which was great - however woke up in the middle of the night, had a vomit than went straight back to sleep which was weird - not sure if thats related tho! She is still covered in spots so im thinking her party will be cancelled for all of her bubby friends, grandparents etc can still come, just not Miss B's friends which is pretty sad! when will these spots ever go! i hope they dont scar????

Sorry to hear your DD still isn't too well. Hopefully she's better in time to enjoy her 1st birthday.
Just a quick question though, it's definitely HF&M (and not chicken pox) isn't it? I only ask because I thought HF&M was localised to those areas, not all over the body. Am simply curious, that's all - not questioning the diagnosis.
My DS had a mild case of HF&M about 6 months ago just after starting daycare. Fortunately for him, he had just a few tiny blisters on his toes, feet and fingertips - none in his mouth and none that turned fluidy. I wouldn't have known there was anything wrong with him, but as I said - he was lucky enough to have a mild case. I recall we had to keep him out of daycare for about a week - so the spots probably went away within 6-7 days at most.
Hope your DD is better soon.
Andie

Thanks Westy! i really hope so too!
Andie - i asked about chicken pox and at the hospital the doc said it was HF&M?! - she has it everywhere! he said it was HF&M because it was on the soles of her feet, palms of her hand and she had a few in her mouth - which is only common for HF&M - so im hoping he is right?!
today is day 6 so i hope tomorrow we wake up with no spots! hehehe

You poor thing!! I know exactly how you are feeling my 20 month old son has HF&M at the moment also, it is horrendous. Although he only has the blisters on his hands feet and ulcers in the mouth, he does have a reddish rash thoug more like a heat rash in his nappy area and a little on one of his thighs...Contracted from daycare, Furious I went to pick him up and another child was there with it sick and his parents hadn't come and picked him up. 2 days later DS comes down with it. Poor little muchkins. Sorry i don't have any advice for you as I'm doing exactly the same things as you...Big hugs though, Us mummy's need them too!!

Oh no your poor bubba! its horrible isnt it!
I found with Miss B panadol didnt help her and she wasnt sleeping and was miserable and crying the whole time so i rung my doc and the doctor suggested Pain Stop - but because of her age she could on have the day one - we gave her half the recommended dosage and she got some much needed sleep for the 1st time in few days!
all up took 11days and spots were pretty much gone!
I feel for you and ur boy! its really not nice at all! | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
